A seriously flawed language textbook

As far as language textbooks go, this one is pretty awful. Here are my key complaints with it:

1. The book eschews practical vocabulary, starting instead with "United Nations" (the second word in the first chapter). More practical items, such as, say, parts of the body, don't show up until chapter 18. And you probably won't be able to describe your daily routine even with the vocabulary set from Book 2.

2. The book deliberately dispenses with one of the most important resources in learning Semitic languages -- the trilateral root system. Instead of presenting every vocabulary word with its root, which would allow for fast recognition of similarities in meaning and associations of word forms with functions, Al-Kitaab inexplicably does not reveal a single root. The point, apparently, is to allow for the several "guess the root" exercises scattered throughout the book, at the expense of properly teaching the material. While students can start to figure out most regular roots (much later than should have been possible), the damage is most apparent in the context of roots with weak letters -- Al-Kitaab's goal seems to be to prevent students from ever knowing about Alifs, Waws, and Yas in roots, or how to correctly conjugate verbs based on them.

3. The book hides the least intuitive language features -- and thus, those that require the most practice -- until the very end. Al-Kitaab omits any detailed discussion of the dual and the feminine plural conjugations until the last few chapters. This means that for the first 90% of the book, none of the verb tables include these conjugations, so students end up getting the least practice with concepts that require a lot of drills and repetitions.

4. Instead of providing simple passages and stories with several new vocabulary words for practicing reading and comprehension, the book offers complicated newspaper excerpts in which the object is to _find the words that students recognize_. For learning vocabulary, the usefulness of this technique is right up there with word search puzzles.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of better textbooks for Arabic.

Disjointed but Sadly the International Standard

Al-Kitaab is the international standard for learning Arabic. I have taken Arabic courses both in the United States and in Morocco. As a result of these experiences, I have been forced into a close connection with the Al-Kitaab series. Through these study experiences, I have concluded that although Al Kitaab is the textbook used worldwide, the market is open for more Arabic textbooks to easily take the cake, so to speak. However, Al-Kitaab does have some positive factors; you will probably be forced to use it in your studies, so prepare. On a side note, I used Alif Baa, the primer, and did not find it particularly helpful, learning Arabic script in some other manner is satisfactory IF you have a native speaker that can help you, as I did.

Positives:

-Organized Chapter Setting is Consistent
-Grammar: My negative review finds little fault with the grammar in Al-Kitaab. On the whole, the grammar sections are informative, and the practice sections for the grammar are useful and help with quickly learning both the easy and difficult aspects of the Arabic language.
-Understanding: This book understands that the Arabic language is DIFFICULT to learn for English speakers, therefore it goes at a necessary pace regarding GRAMMAR only.

Negatives:

-VOCABULARY: This book is vocabulary deficient. The vocabulary is based off of the storyline of Maha, which is present in each chapter. This being said, the vocabulary is not comprehensive, nor is it presented in a logical fashion. I agree with the reviewer that said he did not know how to say his name. For example, the first chapter begins by teaching you how to say "United Nations" but does little to clearly point out articles, colors (presented disjointly), days of the week (presented later), or other beginning information and sentence structures. Furthermore, this vocabulary is not often understood in Arabic cultures: read the section on dialect.

-DIALECT: Arabic language is difficult because Modern Standard Arabic is not spoken. At all. Anywhere. It is only found in the Qur'an and in formal writing. Dialect reigns supreme. Al-Kitaab does a good job at incorporating some Egyptian dialect, which is often used in filmography, yet this pattern of introduction of dialect is inconsistent. The book does allow for listening activities in Egyptian to notice the differences between Egyptian and Modern Standard but does little to explain the formation of such dialect. Thus, if you do master Arabic via this book, you gain the ability to converse via your knowledge of Modern Standard, which makes it easier to learn dialect, yet the presentation of tools for dialect-learning are absent.

-ROOTS: Arabic is a root-based language. Thus, if you learn the root system, learning the rest of the language is easy. I mean it. This hard language is solved through the root system, which was taught to me by a combination of Arab friends and teachers. The book explains the root system briefly, yet does not present a comprehensive section allowing for the formation of roots in a repetitive manner so as to best present the tools for learning the Arab language.

On the whole, you'll probably need to buy this one anyway. Just don't expect to learn Arabic by yourself via this book, but rather as a tool for an intensive study of the language with a competent professor using his or her OWN lesson plans, not those in the book.

Mixed feelings

Not sure if anyone will read this review, because at the time of writing there is now a 3rd edition. However I'll share my thoughts:

* This series is useful only in combination with a class; it's not for the self-learner.
* I understand the methodology behind the teaching style, but I prefer for the grammar to be explained in more detail, not buried in examples. I end up supplementing the text with other reference works.
* The Arabic font used in this book is not easy to read. A font with a wider spacing and cleaner style would have been a better choice.
* One thing to be aware of, if you do a lot of your learning by listening to the audio, is that the audio portion of the DVD's is not easily extracted into a program like iTunes, as was the case in the previous book of the series Alif Baa. In my opinion this is a huge problem. One of my computers does not even have an optical drive, and with the previous book I would load the audio on my iPhone and listen as I walked or commuted. For this book, the publishers sell the audio separately. I think this represents some greed on the part of the publishers; it would have been a small matter to include the audio in the DVD's, or make it available for download.
* Despite the cons listed above, this is probably one of the better Arabic texts available. There are not a lot to choose from.

Great history & Pictures

I purchased this book to obtain the specific historical information that is covered. I have found other things about this era and Hitler's mindset that I have not found in other books so there was a knowledge benefit for me in that area. I used very important snippets of information and pictures in debates and presentations that I conduct so I am happy with this purchase and the content of this book.

Great Book for History Buffs and Classroom Discussions!

This title could not be passed by. It's so intriguing and it is is written by Avi. I had to read it.

What I didn't know was that it was going to open my eyes to 1950s New York during the Red Scare when Americans were suspicious of others being Communists. Granted, I knew of that time but never have I read a historical fiction based on it. Avi convinces the reader that they are actually living during that intense time. Pete, the narrator and "traitor" is a humorous but sincere 7th grader who is caught in the midst of the Red Scare when his dad is accused of being a Communist. He must do some detective work to figure out who to trust and discover the real mystery: Is his dad a Communist?

This is not only a great historical read but also a book that deals with sibling relationships, paranoia and trust, baseball(Giants or Dodgers fans, anyone?), freedom, and believing in yourself despite what other people say. There are some heartbreaking moments that made me realize how difficult life truly was during the Depression and what some families did in order to survive.

I recommend for classrooms discussions and history buffs. This would be a great book for boys who are reluctant readers as it is full of baseball facts and sleuthing that may encourage them to read!

A who-done-it that will keep your guessing

Avi authored this book and it is for ages 8-12, (grades 3-7). It is an historical fiction for youth and includes family, loyalty, bullying, friendship, individual rights and freedom. The events in the novel were inspired by Avi's own childhood experiences with radical left-wing politics and the events of the Red Scare.

It is set is 1951 and twelve-year-old Peter Collison has his life not only turned upside down, but inside out. He is just a regular kid living in Brooklyn, New York. He adores reading Sam Spade, mystery comics and listening to radio serials with his family. Crime dramas are his thing and he loves to imagine that he is the lead detective who solves the crime.

One day an FBI agent mysteriously shows up at his door and starts asking probing questions ... Peter finds himself actually living out his dream of being the lead detective. Because of rumours and suspicions that are flying, his classmates ditch him, even his best friend Kit. He has been accused of having a communist in his family, and the finger is pointing right at his dad. Could this possibility be true? How can Peter trust anyone? Everyone around him is a suspect so Peter takes it upon himself to find out the truth.

He sorts through a litany of clues and happenings that might just end this nightmare, restore his family's good standing, and finally be set free, to be normal, once again.

This is a perfect book to use as a catalyst to start conversations with students in classrooms and with family members around the dinner table about news like the NSA's surveillance of private citizens or how to balance personal freedom with society's larger protections. Readers and especially educators will find real relevance in "Catch You, Later, Traitor." I love the book and had to keep on reading just to see how everything would be resolved....I wasn't disappointed, it is a real page turner indeed. I highly recommend this book.

An Absorbing Middle-School Thriller!

"Catch You Later, Traitor" is an absorbing fast-paced, historically-based mystery that begins in Brooklyn, New York in 1951 at PS 10 when twelve-year-old Pete Collison's teacher Ricky Donavan starts mistreating him in class after spreading a rumor that his parents are Communists. As Pete is ostracized by his classmates, ignored by his best friend, and begins receiving bad grades, he wonders if there is any truth to his teacher's allegations especially when he's followed by an FBI agent. Loving Sam Spade detective novels and listening to radio crime dramas, Pete uses his sleuthing skills to investigate his father's past, hoping to uncover the identity of the informer who reported his family.

The author sets the stage for this fascinating plot in the paranoia of 1950's America where the McCarran Act gave the government license to hunt down those listed as subversives. Not only do those unjustly indicted face prison sentences if they don't provide names of other Communists, but in a national emergency could be incarcerated in prison camps. In this atmosphere of mistrust Pete's father is being investigated by the FBI and the repercussions of that scrutiny has spilled over into the lives of his sons.

Slowly as events unfold the author builds emotional intensity and suspense as Pete begins his own search for clues to the mystery of his father's past which he hopes will uncover the identity of the informer he suspects could be a family member. As Pete gets closer to the truth his fear mounts as the FBI's intimidation grows. In a plot that vibrates with mysterious clues - a missing grandfather, an undisclosed uncle and unknown names on the back of a picture - there are splashes of humour like Pete's defiance as a Giants fan, and in his clandestine meetings with his best friend Kat. I even loved the insertions in italics, bits of the story that read like excerpts from a detective novel.

In a plot that sparks with drama, excitement and emotional power, the characters are well-developed, realistic and unforgettable as the Collison family grapples with a nightmare that could put their security and freedom at risk. Pete Collison like his hero Sam Spade is calm, watchful and wary as he collects the facts, although his mounting paranoia is making him question the loyalty and trustworthiness of friends and family members. Yet for all his bravado and toughness in dealing with his troubles at school, he feels isolated and alone; sensitive to guilt by association. His brother Bobbie a smart high school student is intense and self-absorbed, willing to barter information to get what he wants. Their father Dennis Collison a history professor is a mild-mannered man of integrity who refuses to undermine his values while their mother is supportive and protective, loyal to her husband. Katherine Bayer Pete's best friend is steadfast and devoted, even as she's plagued by the impact of a broken home.

Of the antagonists who add a chill to this unique look at the Communist Scare; Special Agent Tom Ewing is spineless and weak in his intimidation of a child to get the information he wants; Pete's teacher Ricky Donavan, a narrow-minded bully and Chris Collison a weak, manipulative and abusive uncle.

" Catch You Later, Traitor" is a powerful look at the rights and freedoms of individuals in a period marred by fear and uncertainty. I highly recommend it and intend to read other books by this gifted author.

Tells you what you need to know--but you can't skim this book & pass the exam. You have to do the work.

Software testing is a complex and constantly evolving field. But having some well-recognized certifications is a good way to help encourage your continued employability as a software tester and manager of software test teams.

Advanced Software Testing, Volume 2, 2nd Edition, focuses on showing you how to obtain an International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) certification as an advanced test manager. The 519-page book is well-written and lays out what test managers should know to gain advanced skills in test estimation, test planning, test monitoring, and test control.

It also emphasizes knowing how to define overall testing goals and strategies for the systems you and your team are testing. And it gives you strategies for preparing for and passing the 65-question Advanced Test Manager qualification test that is administered by ISTQB member boards and exam providers.

This second edition has been updated to reflect the ISTQB's Advanced Test Manager 2012 Syllabus. The book takes a hands-on, exercise-rich approach, and it provides experience with essential how-tos for planning, scheduling, and tracking important tasks.

Advanced Software Testing focuses on a variety of key processes that a software test manager must be able to handle, including describing and organizing the activities necessary to select, find and assign the right number of resources for testing tasks. About the Author
Howard Murad, M.D., is a pharmacist and board-certified dermatologist. He is an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at Los Angeles and was named one of the top four dermatologists in the country by Vogue.

Dr. Murad pioneered many of the advances widely used in skin care and dermatology. In the late 1980s he founded the Murad Skin Research Laboratory and introduced the skin-care industry to over-the-counter alpha hydroxy acid products. At that time, he also opened one of the country’s first medically supervised day spas. Since 1992, all Murad products have contained antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Dr. Murad’s discoveries that specific supplement formulas could have dramatic effects on the skin led to the introduction of Internal Skincare� in 1996. Dr. Murad also continues to maintain a private practice in Los Angeles.

Good information if you are ready for the message

Good information if you are ready for the message. You have to read and adhere to ALL the principles in the book for it to work AND it takes time. My take on cellulite is that it only goes away when you are in top shape, eating correctly, and taking care of yourself. The book really helped me understand the basic principles.

Nothing new but reinforcing

I haven't found any new discoveries in this book. Pretty much all the obvious facts you hear on Dr. Oz or read in beauty magazines. Most of the points I follow already but still have some cellulite and the battle never ends. The vitamins/supplements, the water, the antioxidants, the exercise, the healthy diet, the skin brushing. All of the same known things. It's nice though to recap everything for reinforcement and reminder and tweak regime here and there. A few recipes are helpful too as I often draw blank in the cooking department. But that's about it. it's helpful to learn the science behind the how cellulite appears but still I have not discovered anything radically new.

Numerical models are presented and computer codes are reviewed, as tools for solving the models. The problem of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers is examined and modeled. The issues of uncertainty in model input data and output are addressed. The book concludes with a chapter on the management of groundwater resources. Although one of the main objectives of this book is to construct mathematical models, the amount of mathematics required is kept minimal.
