COULD BE BETTER . . .

I'm currently attending an Airframe and Powerplant course and this is the latest edition (2009) of the Powerplant Textbook.
PROS:
Unlike the previous edition, the WORKBOOK is now INCLUDED in this textbook, so you only have to carry one book around instead of two. The workbook sections are at the end of each Chapter and all the answers are at the back.
There is lots of material in this textbook, covering things like Reciprocating and Turbine engines, propellers, fire protection systems, and so on.
There are also lots of photos, pictures and diagrams to try and explain things.
CONS:
On the negative side, there are some textual differences between the 2009 (this version) and the earlier version (2007?). In my A&P course, the teachers and us students are constantly frustrated at omitted phrases or sentences/paragraphs that have been relocated to elsewhere in the chapter/book.
TIP #1: Make sure in your Powerplant course that everyone is on the "same page", otherwise you'll take a quiz/test and wonder why you missed a question that you can't find a reference for in the book!
Although there is a lot of useful information in this book, I know it could be presented in a much better way. For one, there are almost no charts. If you want to compare and contrast the differences between a 331 engine and a PT6, you're basically going to have to wade through paragraph after paragraph of tedious text and take notes on a separate sheet of paper. What helped me was making a "compare and contrast" chart of how the 331 and PT6 operated in Alpha, Beta, Feather and Unfeather. Why the book couldn't have provided such a useful chart to begin with is beyond me.
A chart would also have been useful to compare and contrast the differences between a motor, starter, and alternator. Alas, one has to wade through tons of text to get to the "meaty parts".
There are also continuity problems. In Chapter 2, Section A, you learn about the Throttle, Prop Control and Mixture levers in the cockpit. However, when you get to Chapter 12, Section D, they refer to the Mixture lever only as the "Condition lever", which is confusing if you're a student going through this for the first time.
Chapter 2 talks about the Bourdon Tube. But the Bourdon Tube is also mentioned in Chapter 9, although one would never know it because it only has a Chapter 2 reference in the index.
Finally, some of the workbook answers are either wrong or not referenced in the book. In fact, some of the workbook questions and their corresponding answers come WORD FOR WORD out of some of the VIDEOS I've seen in class.
CONCLUSION:
If you're attending and Airframe and Powerplant course, it's not like you have any say as to what textbook you use, but one should be aware of the differences between the editions. There is a lot of good information here, but unfortunately you might have to do some digging to understand things and get the answers you need.
TIP #2: There are some Youtube videos that do a MUCH better job of explaining how things work and how parts move in certain systems.
