When the Harvard Business Review asked Robert Sutton for suggestions for its annual list of Breakthrough Ideas, he told them that the best business practice he knew of was 'the no asshole rule'. Spurred on by the fear and despair that people expressed, the tricks they used to survive with dignity in asshole-infested places, the revenge stories that made him laugh out loud and the other small wins that they celebrated against mean-spirited people, Sutton was persuaded to write THE NO ASSHOLE RULE. He believes passionately that civilised workplaces are not a naive dream, that they do exist, do bolster performance and that widespread contempt can be erased and replaced with mutual respect when a team or organisation is managed right. There is a huge temptation by executives and those in positions of authority to overlook this trait especially when exhibited by so-called producers, but Sutton shows how overall productivity suffers when the workplace is subjected to this kind of stress.

Expletive or not, by the end of this book, listeners will be desensitized to the word "asshole," which is said hundreds of times in this audiobook. Sutton's premise seems pretty simple: get rid of arrogant jerks in the work place from every level of an organization. Through each chapter, he explores a different aspect of assholes, from identifying the type to dealing with them to what one should do if they believe they are an asshole to why it may be beneficial to keep one or two around. You'd think with a title like The No Asshole Rule, some humor would follow, but that's where the book falters. It's too serious and often too simplistic in its resolutions for curing the asshole problem at work. Sutton's reading of his own words lacks conviction. The interview with the author at the end proves interesting since his answers feel more candid than the rehearsed words of the audiobook.

A Real Eye-Opener

I originally bought this book to confirm something I believed to be true about a boss and to hopefully learn how to deal with it. I found out I was wrong, but the book was revealing in many ways about the behavior of people in the workplace. Even the side-stories regarding research that contributed to Prof. Sutton's work were no less enlightening. While I doubt most companies will ever take his lessons to heart in a major way, it is clear that he is on to something important. However, there are some real golden nuggets of information and advice as well as explaining some of the dynamics that allow jerks in the workplace to continue to persist even though they consistently draw down morale and constantly sabotage productivity and drive up costs of doing business.

Still got Bullied out of my Career, but if I hadn't have lended the book to a friend, that might have been different.

This was a great read, although I didn't get to read the whole thing. Unfortunately I was about 20 pages in when I suggested it to a coworker, let him see it, and he accidentally thought I was letting him borrow it and he put it in his bag... I later got bullied out of my career, only about 4 months later. So I never did get to use the much much needed advice from the book, now I am struggling to find a new place for myself in the world after such shady things happened to me at my Fiber Optics Technician Job, it's been hard for me to say the least.. I am purchasing this book again hoping it will re-kindle the desire to work hard.
Will update my review as I progress through the book!

All people new to leadership roles as well as those with "difficult colleagues" should read this book!

This is a well crafted volume that succinctly sets out the very real consequences of permitting boorish employees to set up shop at any stratum in a workplace environment from the perspectives of:
- Lowering staff morale and sapping team spirit, and the associated impacts on performance/productivity/quality of work.
- Staff turnover and the high associated direct costs and 'opportunity costs' incurred when good people leave in order to escape bad apples.
- Potential exposure to legal action due to workplace bullying or discriminatory behaviour.

Dr Sutton's book various facets of what happens when such people and their bad behaviours are tolerated, both those in positions of power or part of ones' peer group – these behaviours are certainly not unique to those in management!

Numerous references to, or commentary by, recognized business and academic leaders is also included that further details bad traits in managers and team members, but also provides examples of exemplar behaviour due either to excellent top-down leadership or individuals simply rising above the poor behaviours demonstrated by others to achieve personal success anyway.

The text is also punctuated by often humorous examples from Dr Sutton's own workplace and academic experience, and his writing style makes this potentially dreary material a joy to read.
