Review
Poka City Blues by A.L. Gibson drew me in. Set in 1930s Poka City Blues brings to light a difficult but realistic insight into a period of time when bigotry is rife and political correctness hasn't been invented. This story will stay with the reader long after that last paragraph. Ica Iova, Reader's Favorite
Poka City Blues by A.L. Gibson is by far one of the most original and well-crafted novels I've read in a long time. I was completely drawn in and absolutely loved the author's use of description of the different scenery, locales, and her attention to detail for the time period. There is a lot of life and drama in these pages. Laura Clarke, Indie Book ReviewersA. L. Gibson has penned an intriguing fictional story in Poka City Blues. Written from the perspective of Sedelia, a black woman in her mid-70s,you are taken on a chilling journey through her life experiences. She writes of being dirt poor, picking cotton, her "skirt-chasing" father, the Ku Klux Klan, rape, murder and more. Red City ReviewsTo say this is totally unlike anything I've ever read before would be an understatement. Poka City Blues is brutal and in your face - the author holds little back. I was enraptured in this dramatic tale the whole way through. Essie Harmon, Indie Book Reviewers

Memorable, emotional storytelling that I'll never forget.
By Kitty Smith
"Poka City Blues" is one of those stories that grabs you by the heart and won't let go. Sedelia's life story is both heartwrenching and hopeful, but always full of love and family even in the darkest times. It's history, and history is rarely genteel or pretty, but throughout it all Sedelia remains strong amid the love of her family and friends.

It reads like a front porch storytelling, with Sedalia on the glider across from you, spinning a story of her life, the bulk of which happened before I was even born. Born in 1939 in Loachapoka, Alabama to a poor family of cotton pickers, she grows up proud of their garden and chickens, reveling in the feel of dark, damp soil between her fingers, the taste of cornbread dipped in buttermilk, and the sight of a junebug flying with a silk thread tied to its leg. They didn't have much, but they had each other.

From Aunt Azalea's ever running mouth that was prone to catching gnats, to Papa tossing firecrackers at crazy Rose's fat behind, her story made me smile and giggle. It also made me angry, the dirty old men who tried to look down her blouse while she cleaned their homes as a child, and the horrible abuse she endured from Fannie and the boys in the cabbage field. Above all it charmed me, and it is a story that will stay with me for a long time. Sedelia is one of those characters with a spine of steel and a story that will bewitch you, and I'm so glad I found this book.

Absolutely brilliant
By Tebutebu
What a brilliantly written story by A.L Gibson. From the very first chapter, I was really drawn in. I started reading the book at night and had to force myself to stop and sleep. This is how much I was engrossed in the book. I love the way the author has written about Sedelia's life in such a tasteful way. Even though she warns from the onset that it would not be a pretty story, I was not afraid to find out what was about to unfold.
The story is set in the 1930's, in the cotton picking Southern part of America, Alabama. The author recount's Sedelia's life journey, and how her family suffered a lot of hardship, while living in one of the harshest times in black American history, but bore it gracefully. I love the story of Sedelia and her family, though poor in material things, they were rich in love, towards one another. This story really tugged at my heart strings. I found myself in tears a number of times at the amount of cruelty that Sedelia faced. From suffering abuse at the hands of a trusted neighbor, to enduring several other abuses, I found this book really emotional.
At the same time there were many occasions that brought a smile to my face, like when her Mama gave Fannie (Bug), a good whooping for being cruel to Sedelia, I could not help but laugh out loud in satisfaction.
This is a brilliant book on all counts. Despite all the cruelty we read about, It is also a story of real love that endured despite betrayals and indiscretions; a book about strong black men and women, who continued to stand strong in spite of tragedy, heartache, pain and betrayal. I highly recommend this book.
