Personajes planos, gran manejo del idioma

Carlos Fuentes, es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes de la literature hispana. Su manejo del idioma es c�modo, preciso, muy mexicano y muy elegante, el manejo del maestro que conoce, domina, y manda con temple, igualito que Manolo Mart�nez cuando le sal�a la corrida. Su personalidad es tan fuerte, que quema el papel y escurre en la tinta. Es por eso que este libro me decepcion� tanto. Tanta personalidad, tanta fuerza, y tanta maestr�a para contar una historia tan peque�a, tan ro�oza y tan pentonta. Qu� el gran genio literario se enamore de una mujer, (MUJER) qu� deje todo por seguirla, qu� pierda su gran amor, puede ser el gran tema. Pero el "gran intelectual" en la historia que nos da Fuentes es un hombre a medias, que no resuelve nada. Su Diana no es nadie, no es nada, es Coca Cola dilu�da, una "starlet" ("wannabe" como dicen los americanos) hueca y sin perfil, cuyo �nicos m�ritos parecen ser el de usar pomadas de sabores en lugares no mencionables en sociedad de damas potosinas y el de ser v�ctima ingenua de jugadas de la CIA m�s viejas y gastadas que mi Volvo. Por favor, o c�mo dir�a Diana, pleeease..... es mucho pujar para salir con un chicharito.... Qu� desperdicio de talento, se�ores. Y sin embargo puedo decir que prefiero leer un mal libro en buen espa�ol a un buen libro mal escrito.

An Immensely Valuable Work

Joseph Sassoon, an academic at Georgetown University, has done us all a great service with this book, "Saddam Hussein's Ba'th Party: Inside an Authoritarian Regime." It is essentially a 275-page summary of voluminous research based on internal documents taken from the Baathist system, one of the most hideous governments of the past century, which had its share. In addition to the physical documents produced by the bureaucracy of state, Sassoon also includes insights from tape recordings of meetings of the Revolutionary Command Council, the leading state committee Saddam himself chaired. Writing this book must have been a torturous process (pun intended).

The book's eight chapters can best be broken down into three themes. One is history, although the book is only secondarily a history book. Chapter one provides historical background, an essential context to the rest, especially as the party put so much emphasis of reviewing what individuals were doing in the 1960s, especially during the 1963 coup which almost began Baath rule, and then during the 1963-68 period, when the party took power for good. If you've already studied Iraqi history, this will be review.

The second theme is the party apparatus itself, and this is the core of the book. Chapters two through five deal with the party's structure and organization, how its branches functioned, how the party was integrated with the state's security apparatus (especially the "Special Security Organization," or SSO), and the party's relationship to the military. These chapters contain numerous anecdotes about how the party operated bureaucratically, how it recruited, rewarded and punished members, and the kinds of roles party departments fulfilled in maintaining Baathist rule. Incidentally, if you follow contemporary Iraqi politics closely, the graphic on page 46 is helpful in keeping track of the terms Iraqis use when discussing debaathification, whether someone was firqa level, shuba, etc.

The third theme is how the party interacted with society. Chapters six, seven and eight deal with the personality cult of Saddam, both the party's efforts to maintain control and resistance, and the relationship of the party to various aspects of civil life (unions, religion, women's groups, etc.). To give a sense of the detail, there is an interesting anecdote in the chapter on Saddam's cult of the investigation of a general who was sent to prison for not having a picture of Saddam on his wall. He had a picture on his table, because he was afraid allied bombing raids would knock the Leader's picture off the wall and damage it, but that wasn't good enough. It's easy to laugh at stuff like this if you haven't had to live in the society.

One interesting aspect that comes across for the observer of contemporary Iraqi politics is Sassoon's observation that one thing the party never asked anyone was his sect. Whether Sunni or Shia, this was never a qualification for party membership, or for most jobs. Of course the Baath was implicitly sectarian in regard to sensitive jobs - key security positions were never given to Shia, and many sensitive non-security positions - like working in Saddam's palaces - were given to Christians. But true to the party's ideology, it really did try to integrate all ethnosectarian groups into the system, and make them loyal Baathists. What would get you killed was opposing the Baath.

The Great Dictator

This excellent book looks at the Ba'ath regime in Iraq, the secret police organizations in that country and the cult of personality that surrounded Saddam Hussein. Joseph Sassoon looks at Iraq as a totalitarian state and uses information gleaned from the fascist regime's own internal records to illustrate it. Saddam's social control over Iraq and the mechanisms employed to maintain it would be familiar to any student of Germany's Hitler or the USSR's Stalin: monitoring of the citizenry, medals and other perks to supporters of the state, utilization of informants, hero worship of the head of state, ruthless punishment of dissidents and corruption of the rank-and-file (i.e., making them participants in the crimes of the party). Illustrated with photos of some party documents.

It's an amazing book. If anyone wants to know about Saddam's regime and that of the Ba'th Party, this book is just the one. Very complete and detailed. Very explanatory about how things used to work under that regime, regarding all social, political and economic areas, and not so hard to read, which is very important given the subject. It was a vital input for my master's investigation project.

Profound Reality Checks for Growing Spiritually

"Mysterious Seed" is a compilation of over 250 short transcendent teachings ideal for daily devotional reading. Each reading contains applications which will impact the spiritual, physical, and emotional life of the reader.

I appreciate the format of the book which encourages reflection and introspection aimed at helping the reader take the proactive steps necessary for dynamic Christian living drawing on the power and resources of God's DNA within us. Bible teacher and best-selling author Bob Mumford uses the analogy of the seed to demonstrate the concept maturing in the Father's love.

Mumford draws on well selected Biblical passages, uses diagrams and charts, as well as his own observations, experiences, and conclusions to help the reader focus on Christ's teaching, his promises, scriptural concepts, and principles for building a relationship of intimacy with God.
At the end of each chapter are straight forward "Thoughts and Questions" used in the anticipation of provoking deep and inspiring introspection on the part of the reader and to encourage a more meaningful relationship with God the Father.

Mumford has a unique gift for getting right to the essence of a concept or life principle. A masterful "out of mind" Experience

About the style: Bob Mumford takes a really BIG discussion and then masterfully presents it in bite-sized readings that any individual, family or group can absorb without ever getting lost. He confronts, but like a father. He presents teaching, but like the council of a friend sitting in your living room. Every time I spend time with it, I have come away with my entire inside in a state of rejoicing.
About the content: I have studied about 70% of the book by now but have told more than a dozen people already about its impact on my life and the assurance that it will change their own. Within the first few readings it became obvious that this book is not an intellectual exercise in doctrine. Without giving away too much, I will say that the Mysterious Seed, if you take your time with it, will help you to receive more and give more of the utterly indescribable Love of God.

You will get a lot more of this book if you work through his other book Agape Road. It's an incredible journey of knowing God the Father. I've been on this journey with Bob since 1998, my life and family has been transformed to a level of agape love that i thought was never possible.

Although only 23, Dominic enjoys enviable success in both television and as a member of the Magic Circle. Solidly good advice that's easy to follow

I got this book before I got Fitness: Achieve Your Dream Body by Stephen Williams, and it's hard to say which I like better. `How to Lose Belly Fat Fast' sounded pretty generic and improbable at first, but when I started reading it I began to think that the author had the right idea. By breaking down your weight loss goals into 30 days you can make it much easier to achieve.
I am a goal oriented person, and I need some sort of plan or guidelines to follow or I just get way off track. This book is easy to follow and full of good, practical tips. Some of it is the same info that you get in other fitness books, but there was enough unique information to make it worth it for me. I thought the author's writing style was easy to follow and conversational, not preachy or bossy.
The book starts by addressing the causes of body fat, and the reasons why it's just not healthy or attractive, but we already know that. Then it goes on to give advice on boosting your metabolism and burning belly fat fast. It promises that you can lose 30 pounds of belly fat in 30 days, and I am not sure if that is possible, but I definitely think that you would lose some significant weight by implementing these tips.
There are tips for healthy eating, the right exercises to do, and the best ways to boost your metabolism so that your body burns fat even when you are resting. I love that idea! The best thing about this short book is that if you don't want to follow it all for 30 days you don't have to. You can just pick the best bits and try them and still lose some weight, even though it won't be nearly as much as if you follow the plan.
I have bought a ton of diet books before, but never one that combined diet and fitness quite the way this one does. It gives it all to you in one neat little package that anybody can manage, even busy people like me who can't find the time or the money for a gym membership. I like the fact that the tips don't cost a lot of money to implement, because I am broke most of the time. And I like the way I feel after trying these tips for only a week. Already I have more energy and have lost a whopping 7 pounds, though I suspect most of that was water weight. Still, any amount off is good in my books!
I give this nifty little book 4 stars and recommend it to anyone looking for an easy to follow get fit plan.

"How to Lose Belly Fat Fast" is THE weight loss book of the year! I started reading this book last night and was so pleased with all of the information I learned. As I delved deeper into the book, I started to learn more things...not only about the proper way to lose weight, but about myself too. In the book metabolism is mentioned; according to the novel, metabolism the rate that your body turns food into fuel. If you're thin and energetic, more than likely you have a fast metabolism; I fall into this category. In the end, this book ended up providing great diet restrictions, such as fat, hydrogenated oil, processed short-chain carbs, and telling us to dodge anything white. Also, it included a very informative video about "6 Foods to Never Eat"...I was surprised by a the foods that were mentioned, especially the margarine; who knew that margarine could cause birth defects? My most favorite part about this book is the exercises, the workout plan, and a workout schedule that is provided. The morning session itself is only 7 1/2 minutes long, and that's including rest time; I'm definitely going to put all of these tips to use. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's not only trying to lose weight, but people who want to be healthy as well...this book is the place to start!!

All these reviews that attempt to compare past and current James Patterson novels are a bit misguided. Patterson does NOT write more than a dozen major novels a year with only some minimal assistance from numerous journeymen co-authors. If anything it is the other way around. Patterson, as described by some of his co-authors, acts primarily as a mentor and editor to help shape the works which they bring to him and then help promote them in exchange for co-credit. That's fine....that's good business apparently....but the basic book is not Patterson's so trying to compare it to his previous solo works is largely irrelevant. Yes, he does have some input and he makes sure the basics are all there as well some of the key elements he knows are important from experience but he is not the primary writer on these co-op novels.

That said, each co-authored novel should best be reviewed on it's own merits with little or no regard for Patterson's previous work. In this case I found the story and characters to be compelling and worth the ride, albeit a bit over the top when it comes to plot twists. My recommendation is to read it and enjoy it but only if your willingness to suspend your disbelief is nearly unlimited and you don't feel the need to exercise much critical judgement or common sense. But, hey it's just a novel so why get too picky, right?

Another disappointment from James Patterson

I've been a James Patterson fan since I was in college (over 15 years ago), so I'd like to think I'm well versed with all things James Patterson, from the Alex Cross series, Michael Bennett & Woman's Murder Club to his stand alone books. I've probably read 90% of everything he's ever written in the thriller genre. Although I have to say the last 3 years (in my opinion) his novels have seriously fell off. They've become too predictable, a little boring and just not what I'm used to reading when it comes to James Patterson. I feel that with his introduction into the children's arena for writing, his adult thrillers have suffered. Or maybe it's the co-authors he's been collaborating with I don't know. You can't tell that from his continued best sellers, but for those who truly cherish the original writings of James Patterson like The Quickie, Kiss the Girls, You've Been Warned, Honeymoon, Don't Blink, Sail, etc., his latest novels are no comparison in suspense, intrigue or originality. I was very disappointed...yet again.

1st & last James Patterson novel

I read a lot and love a well written mystery. Invisible, was not a well written mystery. In
my opinion, the main character, Emmy, was never really developed. Neither was her relationship was Books. It's as if Patterson threw a vague past relationship in there to fill space, certainly not to engage the reader. As the story progressed, I I feel the part of Graham was much better written than the detective side of the story. (Sad when you are pulling for the killer.), And, don't get me started on ending. No spoiler alert here because there isn't much to spoil. It is as if Mr. Patterson had to rush off to dinner so he slapped some crap down and called the story "done". I know James Patterson's novels are no great works of fiction, but I would think, he expected more from himself and his readers. This wasn't even what I would call a good "summer read" or a "beach book". I like a book that makes me feel even a slight bit different when I'm finished. One that makes me "think". Invisible just made me think I had wasted my time and money.
