(aka SAILOR'S BLOOD)
George Abercrombie Fox decided, not particularly rationally and not at all calmly, that he would first shoot the Master-at-Arms and cut off his head and boil it, would string up the cook and all the bosun's mates he could lay hands on, would in various gory and unbecoming ways dispose of most of the other petty officers, and then would set fire to the ship and dance about in glee as she burned to the waterline and sank.
Fox wasn't much concerned about anybody aboard this King's ship. If anyone did manage to escape his imagined attack long enough to attempt to swim ashore, Fox would push him under. His attitude was understandable, for he was still angered and aching from a whipping. He was only eleven years old and a powder monkey, one of the lowest forms of life afloat. Such was the beginning of Fox's career in the Royal Navy.
In a short time, however, he would rise through the ranks. He would survive the brutality of bigger men and demanding officers. He would acquit himself bravely amidst the crashing chaos of cannonfire and hand-to-hand combat. He would battle the French, the Spanish, the Americans ... any enemy who dared to risk his wake.
He would become the toughest bastard who ever walked the rolling deck of a fighting ship!

Interesting youthful perspective on 18th century British naval history
By Patrick Cabe
I tried this on a bit of a whim, given the paucity of reviews. It was a good read, albeit short (an irritation with this entire series -- $2.99 per download for books that run on the order of 100 pages).
A particularly curious element of this book is that it quite literally starts with Fox's birth, as his uncle Abercrombie (for whom Fox is named) is being hanged. The narrative then follows Fox's upbringing, his family life, and the abject poverty of his circumstances, ultimately leading to his joining the British navy as a ship's boy.
There is plenty of action. Fox shows remarkable resourcefulness, spirit, intelligence, and nerve, even as a child in this book. He gets in scrapes and finds creative ways to get out of them again. He kills without compunction -- and the victims richly deserve it! -- before puberty. A quirk I found especially appealing is his skill with a sling...not a weapon one might expect to find in the hands of a sailor lad, but (as the reader finds out) one that comes in mighty handy.
The book contains some sexual content, but it is hinted at, understated, and generally off-stage, rather than explicit. (Authors take note: Some of us, while not prudes at all, just find it a turn-off to have to wade through the clinical details of such encounters.)
The historical context sounds plausible and the settings grittily realistic. A solid start to the series. I look forward to reading others.

Poor boy works his way up through the ranks by ...
By Michael T. Smith
I remember reading this series as a teenager. It is as it is advertised not the traditional British navy hero of the Napoleonic age. More along the lines of Dewey Lampkin's series. Poor boy works his way up through the ranks by merit, skill and hard work. An exciting read with enough violence and the amount of sex for any sailor. Quite frankly, Fox more than his fair share but that is what a good story is all about. I will have to look to see if I still have the original paperbacks in my collection. Still, a good variation from the traditional Hornblower storylines.

If you like "old school" naval adventure this is for you.
By Amazon Customer
If Charles Dickens had written a naval yarn, this is it. The main character Fox, is full of flaws, but you'll nevertheless find yourself rooting for him.
