Nearly Perfect

Good series. I do want to ask Lindsay to hire an editor to handle typos and to help with the abundance of backstory-especially in book 4. I found myself skipping pages so I could get to where the story moves forward again. I like that her female characters are capable and strong and the way the tough male leads can be soft with them.. The sex scenes are delicious, though, perhaps too frequent so they become page fillers, just like backstory is. I am really hoping that the next one in this series is all about the rich story line she tends to give only a fraction of the books to. It's a great premise and she has set up some very interesting conflicts and crises to be resolved. VERY clever having it end with the little one saying what she said on the last page. I want to buy Lindsay's next book and have it be all about the climax and resolution of the Big Story that will bring all these couples she has created, into some kind of singular effort together. Not that the romance part isn't lovely. It is. But Lindsay has serious action fiction writing chops that are held back by writing for only the paranormal romance reader looking for para-normals having human sex. She could kick some serious ass in the same vein as the Underworld stories (ala Kate Beckinsale)- which do have a small romance story line but heavy on the intrigue and action. They have sex. They fall in love. Yes. Yes. We know. Do what you do best, Lindsay and tell us what they live for and what they are willing to die for.

Compelling like all the books from this series!

it is impossible that a series can get so much better with each new book without taking away from the previous books but this one does! If that sounds confusing to anyone reading this review then please read on as I would love to have you understand.

Sometimes in a series, or even in stand alone books by the same author we compare. It is only natural. However with this series and this author the lines blur in our thinking and in what is happening in the series, and it is hard to make that distinction as each book is so powerful but different. It is not that each book is better but rather each book escalates in reader connection as the whole story begins to come together, and our couples stand out even more as their part of the puzzle suddenly makes sense. Eden and Jessie bring this to a head.

Eden is a drug you can become easily addicted to. Of all our heroes he is the most normal and yet his strength, his ability to do what has to be done, his love for family and the way he succumbs to Jessie because he sees who she is has us drooling. In turn Jessie is just as captivating a character and more likeable than the previous women have been, and that is not an easy feat at all. Despite her third species origin and power it is her 'humanity' that wins us and Eden over, and it is their growing love for each other that strikes deep into our hearts. They want a better world for each other and for the world itself just like the previous couples do although at the time they may not be aware of it. It is in allowing themselves to be vulnerable to someone else that brings this into existence.

if all of this was enough to keep us glued to the page the unfolding events are so dramatic, so horrifying as they expose greed and extraordinary selfishness and brutality, and so precarious that we can only hope the next book is close. The ability to write is what has us believing in creatures that we shouldn't believe in, the ability to world-build has us enthralled hook, line and sinker, and the steaminess of lust mingled with love has us squirming much like our heroines in reaction to the incredible men they have attracted.

I could say I can't wait for the next book but the truth is I can. If it is as good as the previous books then it will be worth the wait. If you think you may doubt this then read the little teaser at the end of this novel and you will retract those thoughts immediately.

Dark and stunning!

Bad does feel good. So very good in this latest enthralling instalment of the Blackthorn series.

My initial response when I finished Blood Deep (well when I managed to rejoin reality several hours of recovery later!), was that this is the best book in the series. However, that would be an injustice to the three previous books of brilliance. The Blackthorn series is simply getting more and more addictive, with a plot that gets stronger and more compelling with each page turn. It’s hard to compare all the books in the series as the author offers something fresh in each one of them, while maintaining the integrity of the world building of Blackthorn.

In Blood Deep you are taken into the depths of Blackthorn where ‘bad’ is a way of life and humans are as much of a threat as the third species are. The lowest of the low are sent to Blackthorn, and Eden Reece is intent on fitting right in where trouble resides. Eden’s tattooed arms are proof that he is a worthy resident at The Circus, and of what he is capable of. Pretty soon he gains the attention of Pummel, the most feared criminal in The Circus.

Jessie saved Eden once, so why didn’t he heed her warnings to escape while he could? Something she can never do. No one riles Pummel and gets away with it, but Eden seems to push each of his buttons. She doesn’t know what Eden’s plans are, but only that it won’t end well. And if they don’t ignore the spark between them, it can only get worse.

Eden will do anything to succeed with his plans, and he stoops to depths so low to achieve his goals that you can only applaud him when you discover the reason behind his determination. Jessie is a big part of that plan, but she’s hiding secrets too. Secrets that involve the prophecy.

I adored Jessie. I was desperate to discover her secrets and I must admit I squealed a little when I did. Her story is heart breaking and when she meets Eden you so want Eden to be her hero, even if he doesn’t appear to be hero material at all. Except he is. This was where the emotion got me when Eden’s back story is revealed. Oh my. And this is Blackthorn, so Jessie and Eden are in for one heck of a bumpy ride. They jump from one heart pounding ‘oh heck’ moment and straight into the next one. Lindsay J. Pryor doesn’t just glide over boundaries, she tramples right over them. The story moves along at pace, and with a few familiar faces joining the fray and more revelations made, it makes this a stunning read. The darkest and sexiest yet.

Driving Phobia GONE!

My SEVERE driving phobia came on, out of the blue, just over 2 years ago (after driving fine for many years). Bridges, overpasses, elevated areas, and sharp curves caused me the most problems. After the first few months of trying without any success I just gave up. I lost all my freedom and felt completely worthless and useless. After two years of feeling like a prisoner in my own home I decided enough was enough and started searching for help. I sure wasted a whole LOT of time and money along the way but I finally landed here on this book. Hope whoever is reading this review has found it early in your search because this it's really all you need if you have a strong will to succeed.

I couldn't drive anywhere really. The horrific and paralyzing fear was just too great. I purchased this book two months ago and started practicing immediately after hurriedly (but thoroughly) reading it all the way through and following his suggestions to the letter. Now here I am, two months later, about to take off on a 500 mile trip to see my daughter and I’m completely calm and confident.
YOU CAN DO THIS!! It will NOT be easy, no, not at all but please KNOW you can! When that day of freedom finally comes you will be beyond glad, you will be and feel many wonderful things.

Important Note: I temporarily developed generalized anxiety while practicing as my nerves were raw. Not realizing what was going on I thought something horrible must be wrong with me and I nearly quit shortly after I started. I later learned about being extremely sensitized, that it was normal in the first few weeks, and that it would pass. I really didn’t believe it would pass but it did. I used the techniques from Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Claire Weekes to get through the generalized anxiety while practicing to overcome the driving phobia. I highly recommend you have it in your arsenal before starting out on your road to recovery and freedom. It’s very old school. You just have to chuckle and look past that. She did mention using medication but you don’t need it. If you’re like me, you think you need it, you think it’s the only answer, but it’s not and it would be another thing you would have to work through later so why do that to yourself. So thankful I didn’t.

My first recommendation to anyone suffering with panic disorder/attacks/anxiety

This book single-handedly got me on my road to recovering from Panic disorder (Couldn't leave the house, couldn't be alone, couldn't drive alone, especially highways or far from home, etc.)

As a man, you feel castrated when hit with Panic disorder. All the things you used to do, used to love to do, and still want to do (like going for a hike, camping, taking a day-drive to the beach, driving to the country, even going to the store!) felt impossible for me. It was extremely saddening and depressing. Then, I got this book.

This book helped me just as much as therapy did. I only wanted to take medicine/anti-depressants as a last resort; and I never had to.

I can now drive on my own no problem and simply function! I don't wake up every day being reminded what I can't do. I haven't flown alone yet since this happened, but the idea doesn't scare me nearly as much as when I started. I am completely over "being alone", can drive with zero problem, even far from home, take elevators (with other people... I just hate those things ha), and feel virtually "cured." "Cure" is a bad word for anxiety sufferers, but I'll just say, I trust myself to handle panic attacks in the future. I can get through them, I always have. Future me is always ready for them.

Watching the authors videos on his website helped put a face to the words in the book, which as the other reviewers noted feels like he's sitting right next to you. I was literally saying "holy crap" every other page in this book at how exact he was describing what I was going through.

Combine this book with therapy, just so you have some accountability on what thoughts you're internalizing without realizing it, EXERCISE, and taking some vitamins, and you will be very surprised.

Simply life-changing...THANK YOU to the author!!!!!

I have never written a review for Amazon, though I have been a customer for years. This book has made me break my silence. It has transformed my life, seemingly overnight. I began having panic attacks about 3 months ago and they had reached the point of becoming debilitating. I was avoiding elevators, planes, crowds, even the grocery store. My husband wanted to take me on a (flying) trip to NYC, and I thought I would pass out at the thought of it. I sought a counselor specializing in panic disorder, and she felt sure that I could "self treat" my panic. So I sought out this book. I had barely finished this book when our NYC trip was upon us. The night before the trip I nearly backed out. The anticipatory anxiety was a nightmare. But I put full faith in the principles of this book, barely slept, and rose to get ready for our 6 am flight. I could not eat, I could barely talk, I was so anxious...until the plane took off. Then it was gone. It was like a miracle. I am still in shock at how simple it is to face down a Goliath like panic disorder and win. The trip to NYC, full of elevators, subway rides, and crowds, was actually...yes, FUN! I felt like a new woman, empowered to take back my life. Now when an airplane flies over, instead of saying to myself," I'm glad I'm not on that", I smile, and say to myself," Wow, I wonder what adventure they're off to?!". GET GET GET this book if you have ANY issue with panic attacks, claustrophobia, flying, public speaking, etc. It has been the best money I have ever spent on Amazon, hands down.

What would you do if your child was a psychopath?

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T LIKE SPOILERS

This is one of the few times I was glad I had watched the movie before I read the book. I was prepared for the horrors to come. I knew the mother, Eva, was not particularly likable, and did not want to have children. The only reason she chose to do so is that her husband, Franklin, wanted a child so badly, and she loved her husband desperately and wanted to please him. Eva was capable of love; the attachment disorder was not her fault. In the letters she addressed to her husband, she described numerous scenes where she searched for Franklin frantically at the airport after returning from her trips abroad because she missed him so badly. And she loved her second child, Celia, even though she clearly saw what she perceived as Celia’s character flaws, something many parents have difficulty doing.

So as to the question of nature versus nurture, I think we were given ample clues that the primary cause of Kevin’s problems was nature, although his nature made it extremely difficult for his mother to nurture him in any meaningful way. In answer to questions raised by other reviewers – yes, some children are born with brain defects that prevent them from experiencing normal human emotions. Read up on recent brain research. It will open your eyes.

Another aspect of the situation which was quite frustrating is Franklin’s sheer pig-headedness in refusing to see what Kevin truly is. As the author presents Kevin’s behavior, he has some aspects of sociopathy, which includes the ability to present a charming and attractive face to those he wishes to deceive. Franklin saw what he wants to see, and after years of defending Kevin, Franklin was entrenched in this world view. To backtrack would be to admit that he had been wrong since the beginning, a difficult thing for anyone to do. But to refuse to face facts after Celia’s injury – well, I can’t help wondering what Franklin was thinking about as he lay on the lawn bleeding out after Kevin shot him in the neck with an arrow.

I can understand Eva on an intellectual level, I cannot empathize with her. My husband and I both wanted a child. I had a good idea of what was involved with raising a child. I was eleven years old when my younger brother was born, so I ended up doing a lot of the child care because my mother worked long hours and my father was disabled. Eva was unprepared for the emotional and physical stress involved in caring for a child, but Kevin’s nature made her job a hundred – a thousand! – times harder than for most mothers. My conclusion quite early in the book, especially since I had seen the movie, was that the problem was at least 90-95% Kevin’s, 5-10% Eva’s. She was not the most likable person in the world, but she was capable of love when the person she loved was able to love her back. Whatever Kevin felt for his mother - and he did have feelings toward her - it wasn't love.

Since my own experience as a mother has been the complete opposite of Eva’s, I particularly did not understand the ending. She finally found a way to love her son? She planned for him to live with her after he got out of Sing Sing, whatever “walk[s] out the other side”? I have cut relatives out of my life for far less than what Kevin did: Incest. Pedophilia. Even disrespectful and hurtful behavior toward me. Of course, none of these acts involved my son, but I can say without a doubt that if I had put up with fifteen years of the kind of behavior Eva put up with from Kevin, and then he did what he did, I would get him the best legal representation I could afford but he would never, ever hear from me or see me again. Apparently Eva’s feelings of guilt and responsibility for Kevin’s behavior drove her to the masochistic extreme of regular visits to Kevin in prison, and planning to once again take responsibility for him when he was released. Better her than me.

As for the writing – I found particularly the first one-third to one-half of the book very slow going. Overly complex and turgid prose slowed me down considerably. I am not impressed when an author goes out of her way to sound “literary”. In particular, in a story told in epistolary fashion, words should flow naturally, like conversation. And as I got further into the book, it did flow a little better – or maybe I just got used to her style. In the last half of the book, the exposition was broken up with dialogue more frequently, which helped.

I rarely give books four stars. That means “would read again.” I have seen the movie twice. It is conceivable that at some future date I will read the book again. The copy I am reading now is from the library. I plan to buy a copy for my collection, so that I will have it when and if I decide to read it again.

We need to talk about Lionel Shriver's thesaurus. As another reviewer noted, this book reads like someone who writes with one window open on Microsoft Word and the other on Thesaurus.com. Phrases like "immediate rapacities" and "superficial peripatetics" and "lambent joy" seemed more designed to impress than to communicate. The fact that this epistolary-novel is supposed to come from one estranged spouse to the other seems wholly unimaginable. Is this how a bohemian character who writes budget-friendly travel guides for starving students would communicate with her husband? I doubt it.

My biggest complaint is that the book was over-written. (Example: Every day we spent apart, I would conjure that wide warm chest of yours, its pectoral hillocks firm and mounded from your daily 100 pushups, the clavicle valley into which I could nestle the crown of my head on those glorious mornings that I did not have to catch a plane.)

I also got bored with the newspaper-like summaries of every school shooting ever. I want insight into this family, not a superficial recounting of the same widely-known facts of every other school shooting.

Obviously, this was not my favorite book. I can see how it would prompt discussion and but absent a group debate, this book made up entirely of unlikeable characters is both tiresome and grim.

I want to say that I really did enjoy reading this book

First, I want to say that I really did enjoy reading this book. The prose is advanced and lengthy, but I enjoy books like that because they improve my vocabulary. I read this on my iPad and made a point of highlighting the words I did not know so I could reference them later--I learned quite a few. The first 25% of the book moves agonizingly slow, with most pages dedicated to intricate, deep thought processes and emotional trails of the the narrator. While that was difficult to make my way through, I grew to admire it, because it takes an incredibly talented writer to capture the nuances of our everyday thoughts and connect them to a larger picture. What I mean, is the author take the reader on a journey through the mind of Kevin's mother from before his conception to his current day in prison. The thoughts she had during his infancy tied together with thoughts and actions in his later years, and that I find incredible.
