Loads of Fun

LIke all the "Zack Files," this one is just tons of fun. I gave it to a fourth grader who resisted reading, and now I can't get him to give me my book back! Dan Greenburg has a wonderful ear for the way children think and talk. Well, how boys do, at any rate. I haven't found that girls get as big a kick out of it. But he creates preposterous situations and then resolves them, always with the sympathetic help (or, at least, noninterference) of the divorced Dad (what a surprise.).

Great story!

My first grader loves the Zach Files series! He laughs out loud as I read to him. This was a great one for my son who has begun to have his share of little stretches of truth. He really enjoyed the story and learned a bit about the enjoyment of participating in a science fair too.

Zack Files Are a BIG Hit!

I have been reading this series to my 2nd grade class for a couple of months and they LOVE them! They whine when we have to stop reading and ask for them in any free moment. This one was a big favorite, having your teacher talk about butts is always unbelievably funny! ;) I have been reading these books since the series started years ago, I wish Mr. Greenburg was still writing them. My only complaint is that they are very short for $5 a pop.

About the Author
Cutler J. Cleveland is the Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Boston University, where he also holds the position of Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment. Dr. Cleveland is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy (Elsevier Science, 2004), winner of an American Library Association award, Editor-in-Chief of the Dictionary of Energy (Elsevier Science, in press) and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ecological Economics. Dr. Cleveland is a member of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Energy Statistics, an advisory group to the Department of Energy, and a participant in the Stanford Energy Modeling Forum. He has been a consultant to numerous private and public organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, Charles River Associates, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the MacArthur Foundation have supported his research. Dr. Cleveland’s research focuses on the ecological-economic analysis of how energy and materials are used to meet human needs. His research employs the use of econometric models of oil supply, natural resource scarcity, and the relation between the use of energy and natural resources and economic systems. "What those guys said"

The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.

There are a couple of fundamental ways to study the heavens. A 'modern' approach might be to put your head down, click in a few celestial coordiantes, and wait for the telescope to find a target for you. However a more interesing approach would be to find shape in the sky and locate targets manually. To do that you need to recognize those old landmarks in the sky, the constellations.

The big problem in identifying constellations is to find shape from seemingly random dots. Ray creatively used the same stars, but made 'new' stick diagrams that actually look like what they are supposed to represent. This makes a constellation much easier to visualize, remember, and recognize later. Other texts that attempt this effort fall short because they don't emphasize visual recognition clues.

A major fault of modern texts is the inclusion of unnecessary detail. Ray puts in a few choice details that help the memory and add interesting character to the figures in the sky. But by excluding minutia he draws the reader back to the goal at hand. Ultimately you need to memorize a blueprint of the sky, and this workbook will be your best friend to help reach that goal. Bravo.

A Guide to the Stars Simple Enough for Curious George but Sophisticated Enough for You!

The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:

(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!

(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!

(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!

(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

Best beginner ( i.e. non-astronomer) star chart book out there. I've had 3 copies of this book since the 1980's ( the bindings do not hold up to the intended purpose) , and will buy another when this one finishes falling apart. This is the book to have with you when you and your child / grandchild learn the nighttime sky together. I went to Grand Canyon National Park a few years back to see a spectacular Leonid meteor shower and was pleased to see that this is the star guidebook that the park sold. One rub on this book, besides the binding, is finding the most recent edition because the planetary tables make each edition "dated", but Sky and Telescope and other internet sources now offer up to date planetary tables. H. A. Rey had the ability to make complex subjects of astronomy understandable to the non-scientist. I've owned this book for over 30 years and I am still enjoying it.

"There are 101 recipes split into different categories. I love that the ingredients focus on fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains and heart-healthy fats. I love using my slow cooker, but I am not a fan of recipes that tell you to dump in three cans of condensed soup and a stick of butter. Skip it - there are much better options out there

I received this book free through LibraryThing in exchange for my review. The cookbook started off really well. I found that the opening section on getting to know the slow cooker, and how best to use it, was really helpful. However, overall I was not impressed with this cookbook. I was disappointed that there were no pictures of finished dishes, or times listed for preparation or total cooking. But, what I most disliked was the lack of variety in the dishes. Although there are a lot of sections (soups, chicken, meats, desserts, etc.), the ingredients themselves were too similar. A large number of the recipes involved tomato-based products. When I made these recipes, I found the tomato flavor overwhelmed many of the finished dishes. There are also some recipes that are completely missing ingredients and directions. For example, "Red Beans and Rice" is missing "rice" from the ingredients list. The only reference to "rice" is to serve 1 cup of beans over 1 cup of rice. When finished, this dish makes 10 cups of beans (meaning 10 cups of rice). This information and the time involved is not included in the instructions. Although the introduction was interesting, the cookbook is a complete miss for me. I would not recommend it.

Disappointed. It looks like a bunch of Word docs bound together. No pics, no graphic design to speak of. Recipes were predictable and not very interesting. Sending this book back.

I received a free copy of this as an ePub. It's an okay recipe book if you are a busy person who hasn't ever visited the Med. I use my slow cooker frequently, but I don't think this recipe book will be useful to me. It's got basic recipes. Most of them don't seem especially authentic and even though they all use the slow cooker, they don't eliminate the need to precook using conventional cookware. So what's the point? Like I said, it's not for me, but it might be very helpful for someone interested in trying out Med cooking and with little concern about authenticity. It could be a real time saver for working moms (and Dads).

Keep at it, Eugene!

To be vitally human there are a few authors one must read - Shakespeare, Plato, Rousseau, Alan Bloom and Eugene Hecht. With only limited exaggeration - notable among man's achievements is Hecht's new 4th edition of Optics. The first edition was the central (and only) text assigned in junior year optics for physics majors at many universities in the 1980's. As a near adolescent I was pleased by expert writing and well delivered humor in those far off years of college life.
The wonders of electromagnetics - which leads to everything in our modern age of electronics, radar, telescopes and computers - is beautifully clarified with clear pictures, concise description and completing examples in this new edition.
I hope Hecht lives to be a thousand such that the hundredth edition of Optics can enlighten people in the 31st century with as much joy and fascination as his 4th edition does today.
After so many years away I find Hecht there again to help me, not this time to peak inside the mind of nature but to make a living, and do so with added pleasure, knowing Hecht continues to improve the nearly perfect.

OK textbook, could have been better

I used this textbook for an introductory optics course. It was an average book. There weren't any examples in the core of the text, but fortunately the author did include worked solutions in the appendix for some of the end-of-chapter problems, which I used as examples to work from. Most of the questions that were answered were the easier ones, that anybody halfway intelligent should be able to figure out.

On the plus side, there were lots of equations and lots of description to help learn the material. Some sections were better than others. The sections on mirrors and lenses, for example, were wonderful; I never understood that stuff in high school, and Hecht made it all clear. The tables he had for the different types of lenses/mirrors and their properties were great. An example of a poor section was that on diffraction; I had no clue what he was talking about.

The book is a bit expensive, but overall it is alright; certainly better than some of the other books I used during my degree!

Great in combination with the Schaum's outline by the same author

If this book had to stand on its own I'd say it is a failure. The author is very good about explaining concepts. For example, he tries to make practical sense out of reflection, refraction, and the Fresnel equations via conversational examples in nature such as the "mirages" you see on highways in the hot summertime. Also, his derivations are quite detailed and complete. However, he works very few numerical examples. He just expects you to do so in the exercises with no demonstration by him on how to do it. As someone has previously mentioned, the subject of Fourier optics is spread all over the book in a completely disorganized manner.

So why am I giving it four stars? Because, unbelievably, it is the best optics textbook out there for those of us seeking an academic treatment and not some popular mechanics text. Also, the author has written an outstanding Schaum's outline, Schaum's Outline of Optics, that goes hand in hand with this book. They complement each other perfectly. Simply read a chapter of this book, go to the corresponding chapter in the Schaum's outline, and there the same author shows practical problems and their solutions.

If the author ever writes another edition of this text it would be great if he folded in some of the practicality of his Schaum's outline into this very complete but unpractical text.

Used this book for introduction to religion class. As a text book, it was simple to read and comprehend. This book would make an excellent reference guide in studying the Christian Theology and the Catholic Church.

Required reading

This was required reading for a Theology class.
The book was a good overview of Christianity as well as a few other religions. I think that it was more heavily influenced by Christianity/Catholicism, but as I was taking the course at a Jesuit university that was to be expected. Overall it was a thoughtful read and not bad for course reading
