This was a wonderful book! It's succinct, humorous, and explains the basics of conducting simply but without oversimplifying. I really like that the author delves into the "why" behind the gestures explained. Too many conducting books are one-sided, either focusing on just the musical ideas or just the movements of conducting. This book has a perfect mix of both. It is not an in-depth, super thorough explanation of any one topic but it does a fantastic job of hitting all the main points of conducting. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in conducting, as a beginner, professional, or someone just curious about the topic.

I know nothing about conducting, although, as a musician, I wanted to learn about this art. I bought book based on other reviews, and found those right on. It's clear and concise and easy to read. It flows very nice. The author took the approach, that you don't know a thing about conducting, which is goo. Hence, the title. Many authors write "beginners" books, and seem to think that you have some knowledge about the subject matter. Tis author starts from the very beginning. I highly recommend this book if you're looking to gain an understanding about conducting, or even you are a conductor and want to improve upon your skill

The book is an excellent reference. It is also good for beginners , especially those beginners who think you can just wave your hands to conduct.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell (1946-2004) combined the inquiring nature of a research scientist with the soul of a caring teacher.� Ove his 30 years of teaching introductory biology to both science majors and nonscience majors, many thousands of students had the opportunity to learn from him and be stimulated by his enthusiasm for the study of life.� While he is greatly missed by his many friends in the biology community, his coauthors remain inspired by his visionary dedication to education and are committed to searching for ever-better ways to engage students in the wonders of biology.

Eric J. Simon is a professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College (Henniker, New Hampshire). He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in tropical marine biology and careers in science. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to increase active learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. Dr. Simon is also the author of the introductory biology textbook Biology: The Core and a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Jean L. Dickey is Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Clemson University (Clemson, South Carolina). After receiving her B.S. in biology from Kent State University, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. In 1984, Dr. Dickey joined the faculty at Clemson, where she devoted her career to teaching biology to nonscience majors in a variety of courses. In addition to creating content-based instructional materials, she developed many activities to engage lecture and laboratory students in discussion, critical thinking, and writing, and implemented an investigative laboratory curriculum in general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, 2nd Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Kelly Hogan is a faculty member in the Department of Biology and the director of instructional innovation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, teaching introductory biology and introductory genetics to science majors. Dr. Hogan teaches hundreds of students at a time, using active-learning methods that incorporate technology such as cell phones as clickers, online homework, and peer-evaluation tools. Dr. Hogan received her B.S. in biology at the College of New Jersey and her Ph.D. in pathology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research interests relate to how large classes can be more inclusive through evidence-based teaching methods and technology. She provides faculty development to other instructors through peer coaching, workshops, and mentoring. Dr. Hogan is the author of Stem Cells and Cloning, Second Edition, and is lead moderator of the Instructor Exchange, a site within MasteringBiology� for instructors to exchange classroom materials and ideas. She is also a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, 8th Edition.

Jane B. Reece�has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from�Harvard�University�(where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from�Rutgers�University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University�of�California,�Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral�fellow in genetics at�Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at�Middlesex County�College�(New Jersey) and�Queensborough�Community College�(New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology,�Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections,�Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

it came wrapped in plastic and looking brand new. I read that other peoples Mastering Biology codes didnt work, and ive been warned specifically not to buy from Amazon. But mine did work. overall happy with this transaction

I thought something like this would make a great present

My boyfriend and I recently got engaged and are also about to mark two years of dating. I thought something like this would make a great present. There are many popular couple's journals I came across at my local bookstore (such as Why I Love You or Book of Us) but this one was by far what most met what I was looking for. It is inarguably the most attractively designed. The graphics, fonts, diagrams, quotes, and colors are all beautiful, whereas other journals are lacking in color or any special design elements. The prompts follow a logical sequence, starting with how your relationship started and ending with your hopes for the future. None of the questions are repetitive or feel not worth answering. The design is mainly unisex and could be given to anyone. Though the prompts are not gender specific, making this book usable for LGBT couples, there are a few pictures throughout of a man and a woman together.

This book is not for people in new relationships. It requires in depth knowledge of your partner and assumes a lot of shared experience. The "Treasure the Big Moments" section asks when you got engaged, when you got married, what your honeymoon was like, when you were first intimate together, and what your first home was like. That being said, I chose this book largely because it was the most friendly to couples who have not yet lived together or gotten married. The Treasure the Big Moments section is only a couple pages out of the entire book, and all of the other questions were still applicable to our relationship. My plan is that we'll complete the rest together after we get married!

Quick and rewarding guide to getting the most out of WebPageTest.

WebPageTest is an indispensable tool in every performance engineer's toolkit. If you're an existing user, this book will fill in and explain important gaps. If you're just getting into the performance field, this book will give you a fast head start on the rest of us, who had to learn it through trial and error.

The book is split into three high-level sections:

Basic Use Cases: offers a walkthrough of the waterfall, connection view, and the metrics that WPT results provide. Think of it as web performance 101: what metrics you should look for and where, how to interpret them, and how to compare tests. In short, a good intro for someone new to the field, and a quick skim for those familiar with the topic.

Intermediate Use Cases: a more accurate description would be "test setup". This is a great section that covers the many decisions you have to make to ensure that you're measuring the right things: picking the browser, location to run the test from, picking the right network profile, scripting multi-visit flows, testing authenticated pages, and more. Too many folks overlook all this, which leads them to focus on optimizing the wrong bottlenecks -- don't make this mistake! This section provides a nice hands-on look for how to use your existing analytics data to set all the parameters.

Advanced Use Cases: a hands-on look at driving WPT through API (e.g. monitoring performance changes over time), integrating it with your build infrastructure (e.g. to detect performance regressions at commit time, before they reach production), and setting up your own private instances (e.g. to test pages that can't or shouldn't be reached by public agents). The instructions are simple and easy to follow; you'll be up and running in no time.

In summary, a quick and rewarding read. A perfect book for someone new to the field, and a helpful resource for the rest of us. I wish I had this book when I started, it would have saved me a lot of time!

Good information

This book helped me with the structure of organizing a lead program. There is work involved in getting leads. I don't want or own MLM business, but this book will still help me with my business. The strategies in this book are common-but they work, and are useful. One part I especially like about this book is how he identifies hot, warm, and cold markets. I understand that the more you talk to a person-the more you are able to get to sell to them. You have to have an extended period of interaction with people sometimes for them to buy from you and not from another person. Everyone will tell you that lead capture pages are useful, everyone will tell you to do such and such with people. The power that comes from talking to people and building relationships does work-check out this book-It is inexpensive, and make sure you follow it! If you cannot make whatever you're doing a success with it, then try something else using these same methods. Buy this book.

Incredible story of the power of one woman willing to love...

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting because the story is so compelling. How one woman's heart can hold so much compassion and be so willing to give up all of her advantages and privileges in life to reach out to the poorest of the poor. She has truly found the way to true riches and we could all learn a lot from her example. What I really love is that the proceeds of the sale of this book are going to help the poor in the garbage dumps of Egypt. BUY THIS BOOK-you get a wonderfully told story, history of the ancient land of Egypt, the key to true fulfillment and you get to literally donate to help these people. A powerful story about servanthood

The world does not often understand what God values, but Mama Maggie does...love others first...servanthood. The quality which characterized the life of Jesus was servanthood. After reading this book I came away thinking that she is secure about her identity in Christ so she can totally focus on doing the work that God calls her to do. Mama Maggie's life story is beautiful and beautifully told in this book.

Meet the Need - Be the Change

There was a time, not so long ago, when stories from out of the Mideast rarely made news in the West. Those days changed, likely forever, with the 9/11 attacks. It is likely that the world did not change on that date, but the average American’s view of it certainly seemed to do so. Today we find our news full of stories from that area—stories of death and destruction, of escape, and of terrorism. Mama Maggie, by Marty Makary also comes with some of the same news, but more importantly, it provides a story of a woman sacrificing for others, even in the face of all of those tragedies.

Mama Maggie, born Maggie Gobran, is an Egyptian Coptic Christian. Having grown up in a well-to-do family, she nonetheless found her home and calling with the poor who live outside greater Cairo, in the waste from the city. Fifty thousand such residents pick up and sort the city’s trash, looking for anything that can be re-used, re-cycled, re-furbished—or all too often, simply eaten. Almost half of the children born there will die before the age of five—and all this within sight of a “modern” city.

The woman in white, Mama Maggie, seeks God in unlikely places and brings Him to the suffering “garbage people” of Cairo and elsewhere. For years, she has encouraged people around the world to help her in her cause, becoming a sort of Mother Theresa to the area and for this age. She has provided food, built schools, provided medical care, and more. Her story will challenge readers and will open their eyes to the plight of a religious minority in a part of the world increasingly under attack from ideological/religious zealots.

Notwithstanding the difficult lives I read about in Mama Maggie, I found Makary’s emphasis to mirror Mama Maggie’s own. That is, this is less a story of suffering and more one of hope, less one of the downtrodden and more one of the upwardly moving, less a tale of those in need, and more a chronicle of those, like Mama Maggie, who are meeting those needs, finding blessing in the process. Mama Maggie will lift your consciousness and leave you looking for your opportunity to meet the need.
