Who were the first and most important empiricists, what were their main ideas and how did they influence each other? These are the primary questions that this book seeks to answer. The author begins by introducing the early background of empiricism, which was in essence a revolt against Aristotelianism and the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas, which conjoined Aristotle and Christianity. Empiricists basically believe that knowledge is gained through sense experience rather than through abstract reasoning. It was fascinating to read how each of the empiricists covered thought that sense data was turned into actual knowledge. Some of their theorized systems may seem quaint and rudimentary to us, but in many ways they are not as off the mark as they may first appear, since in any case there seems to be a limit as to what neuroscience and biology can ultimately reveal about this process. Interestingly, Francis bacon had some insights which suggested some of the cognitive biases that have been demonstrated today by people like Daniel Kahneman. (Because these area of science can sometimes be so difficult to grasp, oddly enough I often find myself thinking that some of these writers apparently crude descriptions may "work" just as well.) The book is also a great history of philosophy as Rosenberg covers the different times in which each philosopher wrote and also connects each thinker with his peers, as appropriate.

They spend decades in pursuit of something that someone convinced them they should want, without realizing that it won't make them happy.

Anything You Want is a manifesto about living life, appreciating enough, and doing what matters. It's most of what fabled entrepreneur Derek Sivers learned in ten years of starting and growing a small business, compacted into something you can listen to in an hour and a half.

A life worth living starts with knowing your personal philosophy of what makes you happy and what's worth doing.

He has a diverse background of experience, including working as an actor, speaking seven foreign languages, holding a world record in tango, and being a national Chinese kickboxing champion. Read his review of Derek Sivers's Anything You Want:

I love this book!

Derek is the entrepreneur's entrepreneur. Just as important, perhaps more so--he is a phenomenal teacher. Whether detailing the fascinating rise of CDBaby, explaining catastrophic (but common) founder mistakes, or teaching me about relational databases in two minutes using analogies, he makes the complex simple. Moreover, he makes it all actionable.

If you want a true manifesto, a guidebook with clear signposts, and a fun ride you'll return to again and again, you have it here in this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. --Tim Ferriss

In the end, it's about what you want to be, not what you want to have
By B
"In the end, it's about what you want to be, not what you want to have."

If you agree with that statement (I think my favorite quote from this book), you need to read this book.
If you're looking for inspiration.
If you're afraid of failure.
If you want to start something.
You need to read this book.

"Don't pursue business just for your own gain. Only answer the calls for help."

Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby shares his success and his failures in this remarkably straight forward and honest book about how he basically accidentally founded a remarkably successful internet company - long before the internet bubble and without knowing anything about it.

I read this book in a couple of quick subway rides, to and from work. Don't be fooled by its ease, though. While you'll zoom through it, you'll close it feeling inspired and ready to start something new and, most importantly, you'll close it feeling less afraid of failure and less self-conscious about doing what makes you happy in life.

One more favorite quote: "... if you think true love looks like Romeo and Juliet, you'll overlook a great relationship that grows slowly." Revolution - in business and in life - often starts with a small step.

This book will help you remember that.

Connecting ...
By eackbarali
I used to be a fan of the self-help books, all the way from Norman Vincent Peale to Dale Csrnegie to Anthony Robbins. The point of all of the reading was to just learn about living life at a higher frequency. But I started to move away from these because they made things look so very easy, to the point where I think they are almost irrelevant to the real world.

I was brought to this book through Seth Godin's Blog. It was an excellent read to me because it seemed to be a very honest and realistic discourse. The points of inspiration in this book are not Pollyanna-ish in the least. Sivers made errors, retreated, emerged, retreated again and then emerged again. Ups and downs. No smooth path. And he relates it very clearly.

I have built a successful business over the past 7 years but I have not enjoyed the ride. I am always looking to the end. But now that things are much better, I look back and see that I could have really enjoyed the process much more, and really it is the process that is the juice for me.

Sivers distills this very very well in writing about his experiences. Reading this has shaken me up tonight and brought to the forefront of my mind thoughts that I need to make some serious changes finally that will make me happier and my business more successful.

Thank you Derek Sivers for this book!

An honest account
By Vanessa
While there is little here that you can't find in many other business books, it sounds like a very honest account of one man's journey. It's a short book that details the decisions (good and bad) and events that happened on the way to creating and eventually selling CDBaby. There's no secret in the book that will help you succeed in a similar way, but there are some important mantras that can be taken away, such as the importance of focusing on the customers above everything else. Due to the length of the book, it's hard to rate this book as you would a 300 - 500 page work. The book is worthwhile, but not great. Think of it as an opportunity to sit down with the author for an hour and having him tell you about the experience... definitely worthwhile.

What Doesn't Kill Us: The New Psychology of Posttraumatic Growth, by Stephen Joseph

For the past twenty years, pioneering psychologist Stephen Joseph has worked with survivors of trauma. His studies have yielded a startling discovery: that a wide range of traumatic events—from illness, divorce, separation, assault, and bereavement to accidents, natural disasters, and terrorism—can act as catalysts for positive change. Boldly challenging the conventional wisdom about trauma and its aftermath, Joseph demonstrates that rather than ruining one's life, a traumatic event can actually improve it.

Drawing on the wisdom of ancient philosophers, the insights of evolutionary biologists, and the optimism of positive psychologists, What Doesn't Kill Us reveals how all of us can navigate change and adversity— traumatic or otherwise—to find new meaning, purpose, and direction in life.

Review
Elaine Iljon Foreman, author of Fly Away Fear: Overcoming Your Fear of Flying
“Convincingly challenging, highly enlightening, and compulsively readable, What Doesn't Kill Us is thoroughly recommended for both those who have and have not experienced trauma. A transformational new perspective.”

Elaine Fox, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at University of Essex
“What Doesn't Kill Us is an insightful and entertaining account of the new psychology of resilience. Stephen Joseph brilliantly combines personal anecdote with cutting edge psychology to explain why all of us have the capacity to triumph over adversity. A must read if you ever wondered why most of us rebound so well after disaster, What Doesn't Kill Us is an invaluable guide for anyone wanting to know how to cope with trauma.”

Richard Bentall, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Liverpool
“In this fascinating book, Stephen Joseph maps out the rarely explored positive consequences of trauma, reminding us that growth is possible even in the most adverse circumstances. Although essential reading for clinicians working with traumatized patients, What Doesn't Kill Us is so accessibly written that it should appeal to anyone interested in the human condition.”

Dr Kate Hefferon, Senior Lecturer, University of East London and author of Positive Psychology: Theory, research and applications
"This is the book we have been waiting for Stephen Joseph to write. With decades of experience and knowledge, Joseph presents the wonderfully complex world of posttraumatic growth in an accessible and personable way. Not only does the book provide the most-up-to-date research, What Doesn't Kill Us offers tangible approaches to developing growth after trauma; a feat that will be valued by many."

Dr Nigel Hunt, Associate Professor in Health Psychology, University of Nottingham
"This is a caring and thoughtful account, arguing for the normality of post-traumatic stress as a process of adaptation. Professor Joseph presents a personal and positive perspective, showing how people can come through painful experiences and live fulfilling lives.... His THRIVE model provides a coherent approach to helping traumatised people."

Donald Meichenbaum, PhD Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment of Victims of Violence, Miami, Florida
"Traumatised individuals have a story to tell, as well as re-author. Professor Stephen Joseph is compassionate, attentive listener and a sensitive and scholarly conveyer of this narrative process. He has ably blended his many years of research and clinical practice into an enlightened story of post traumatic growth. This a book that should be read by all who encountered trauma and those who love and treat them. Kudos to Professor Joseph for providing a needed new direction for the treatment of those who experience [posttraumatic stress disorder] and related challenges. This book is a clarion call for a Constructive Narrative Perspective to psychotherapy, filled with pathos and hope."

Dr Gill Hicks MBE, survivor of the London Bombings, July 7, 2005
"What Doesn't Kill Us — indeed does and can make us stronger as brilliantly presented by Professor Stephen Joseph and lived throughout my every day."

Terry Waite CBE
“We live in a world in which suffering is endemic. In this book Stephen Joseph sounds a hopeful note.  Suffering need not destroy.”

Robert J. Wicks, Professor, Loyola University Maryland, and author of Bounce: Living the Resilient Life
“What Doesn't Kill Us seamlessly combines needed inspiration and the most advanced information about the new psychology of posttraumatic growth for those who have experienced great suffering. Stephen Joseph, one of the leading experts in the world on trauma, resilience, and growth, offers both compelling stories and practical information. What Doesn't Kill Us is a book of wisdom—both for those who have undergone great stress as well as for those who love and treat them. It is psychology at its best: honest, hopeful, helpful, and based on sound serious research.  Reading it makes me proud to be a psychologist.”

Vaughan Bell, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London
“In an area beset by wishful thinking, Stephen Joseph makes the scientific case for how difficult times can lead to personal growth.  What Doesn't Kill Us is a well argued and well evidenced challenge to the idea that trauma is necessarily a curse.”

Publishers Weekly
“Informative and thoughtful.”

Kirkus Reviews
“A sure-to-be-controversial, provocative challenge to prevailing wisdom on how to deal with stress.”

New York Journal of Books
“What Doesn't Kill Us is accessible for all readers.... Well worth the time to read, digest, and utilize in one's daily life.”

Stephen Regel, Honorary Associate Professor/Co-Director Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham
"Stephen Joseph's book is inspirational and, not just for the lay reader but also for all therapists, regardless of their theoretical orientation, as trauma in inherent part of their work. It goes far beyond the narrow confines of current clinical approaches to working with trauma and posttraumatic stress and challenges all clinicians to think about what we actually say and do in the consulting room. He takes us along the path of post traumatic growth as an experienced and perceptive guide, opening up many new thought provoking therapeutic possibilities and avenues to facilitate post traumatic growth rather than merely deal with symptomatic change. His chapter on signposts to the facilitation of growth following adversity, through the acronym THRIVE has a simple elegance that everyone can adopt in our current uncertain times. To say that it is essential reading would be an understatement. It is essential as a survival guide to life."

John Harvey, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Iowa
“In What Doesn't Kill Us, Stephen Joseph brings his expertise as one of the world's most prolific and influential scholars of trauma and over two decades of clinical experience to bear in producing a literate and compelling book on growth from and through adversity. The book is replete with powerful story-lines of people who persevered in the face of great pain and loss: From Michael J. Fox to Viktor Frankl we learn how survivors lived Nietzsche's dictum of what doesn't kill you can make you stronger. Joseph gives voice to the non-famous and famous alike as he tells stories of survival and thriving, both in personal and global crises. All the while, the book is highly educational about the dynamics of posttraumatic growth and related concepts. It is a rare feat to produce a book that will appeal and be useful to the general public, as well as scholars and practitioners. Joseph has done so.”

Mick Cooper, Professor of Counseling, University of Strathclyde
“Beautifully written, drawing on leading-edge scientific research to reveal one of humankind's noblest qualities: the capacity to find meaning and growth in the face of near-unbearable suffering.”

About the Author
Stephen Joseph is professor of psychology, health and social care at the University of Nottingham, where he is co-director of the Center for Trauma, Resilience and Growth and an honorary consultant psychologist in psychotherapy.

Excellent Treatment of Topic of Posttraumatic Growth - Provides Real World Examples
By John E. Taylor
What Doesn't Kill Us: The New Psychology of Posttraumatic Growth is the best book or artical I have read on the subject.

This is a must read for anyone who is or has experienced PTSD and for their family and friends as well. This book provides a wide variety of excellent examples of people both male and female who have experienced Posttraumatic Growth (PTG) allowing the reader to easily identify a person/case they can relate too and perhaps model on their way to PTG. At the same time the author provides numerous methods to help the reader find a method they are most comfortable with so that they can more rapidly recover from traumatic experiences.

The author backs up all of his assumptions/conclusions with real world research which makes this a valuable asset to the library of a clinician and or student entering into an examination of this important topic. Please know that the research and statistical information provided does not take away from the personal tone the author takes or the ease of understanding provided.

An original: A unique and new perspective on trauma recovery
By CGSansone
Without reservation, this is one of the most valuable books on trauma because of the unique contribution it offers practitioners. Drawing in part from Positive Psychology, the theory of post-traumatic growth adds a new and unique perspective to existing, traditional trauma theory--that trauma survivors can heal and grow beyond the bounds of simple recovery. This book is rich with case studies and research from the author's own work and those prominent in the field of PTG. I've referenced this book for my own wellbeing as well as for my work in leadership coaching and in teaching and leading trauma recovery workshops..

Started slow, but wound up highlighting a lot.
By AlohaFireGuy
Good book. The first couple of chapters were a little slow but then it picked up. The insights into trauma as it relates to people's worldview were insightful.

Lightspeed Magazine is a monthly science fiction magazine that features all types of sf, from near-future, sociological soft sf, to far-future, star-spanning hard sf, and anything and everything in between:

In “All That Touches the Air” author An Owomoyela explores the boundaries of differing moralities, as humanity tries to live alongside an unlikely ally—a parasitic being that believes only in natural law.

In “Maneki Neko” Bruce Sterling takes us to a networked Tokyo, where strangers offer anonymous gifts, and what is needed is freely given without question.

Tom Crosshill brings us a story of a boy, his dog, a lab, and many universes in “Mama, We are Zhenya, Your Son.”

“Velvet Fields” by Anne McCaffrey, is a tale of a newly-settled world, the consequence of ignorance and the price people of conscience might pay for it.

Review
It's hilarious―LeBron James

This is 100% Jesse. Do it differently and you get different results. That's the way he has operated his entire life and it has worked beautifully.―Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, Duke Basketball head coach

Jesse is a risk taker and is always trying different things to get better. Plus, he's fun to go out with.―Tom Brady, New England Patriots, four-time NFL Champion, two-time NFL MVP

Most of us go through life on auto-pilot. New day...same routine. This guy beamed a "live action hero" into his living room for 31 days to shake up his life. Sometimes you have to have the guts to do something radical to get results.―Dolvett Quince, The Biggest Loser

Jesse knows what it takes to succeed in business and in life - a Don't Quit attitude! Our US Military embraces that attitude in training and survival, no one more so than the elite Navy SEALs. When my pal invites SEAL into his world, Jesse's life is never the same again! The relationship between these guys is outrageous - it's like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air meets Rambo! But with all the insanity there are strong life messages, hysterical moments, and great lessons to be learned. Like Jesse, this book is a HIT!―Jake Steinfeld, chairman and founder of Body by Jake

George Foreman once gave me great advice. When I told him my husband ran 100 miles non-stop he said, 'Sara, don't try to understand a man like that. Just love him.'―Sara Blakely, Founder of SPANX, Jesse's wife

"Living With A Navy Seal is funny and compelling with practical wisdom that leaves the reader feeling elevated and empowered. It also deeply impacted my own personal journey to health, fitness and well being."―Senator Cory Booker

About the Author
Jesse Itzler eats only fruit 'til noon, loves Run-D.M.C., and enjoys living life "out of the box." He cofounded Marquis Jet, the worlds largest prepaid private jet prepaid flight card company which he and his partner sold to Berkshire Harhaway/NetJets. Jesse then helped pioneer the coconut water craze with Zico coconut water, which was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company. He is a former rapper on MTV and he produced both the NBA's Emmy Award-winning "I Love This Game" music campaign and the popular New York Knicks anthem "Go NY Go." When he is not running ultra marathons, eating vegan food or being a dad to his three kids, Jesse can be found at the NBA's Atlanta Hawks games, where he is an owner of the team. He is married to Spanx founder Sara Blakely.

This dude is outta his gourd
By Paul Ollinger
Early in my reading of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods," I found myself thinking, "I should walk the Appalachian Trail!" A few chapters later, after learning of Bryson's hiking, sweating, and chafing experience, all I could think was, "Screw that. I'll stay indoors, thank you very much."

I had a similar experience reading Jesse Itzler's informative, inspiring and hilarious fitness memoir, "Living with a SEAL."

Itzler is a compulsively motivated human being who has achieved crazy success in entertainment, business, and fitness (to say nothing of marriage) by doing things others haven't thought of, view as contrarian or consider bat-shit insane. (is "bat-shit" hyphenated?)

In LWaS, Jesse recounts the intense, month-long training hell he brought on himself by inviting a real-life Navy SEAL to live with him and his family. Early in the book I was thinking, "...maybe I should turn up the heat on my workouts and push the limits of my mind and body." Then I read about Jesse's torn muscles, hypothermia and bloody nuts (yes, those kind of nuts), and thought, "naaahhh."

Indeed, Jesse holds back none of the grueling details involved in training with one of the world's most elite warriors and the marital complexities that arise when you host him in your family's apartment.

Like SEAL, Jesse has one speed: 110% x 24 x 7. He's also a little bat-shit insane and a really funny writer. If you're into fitness and/or crazy people, you'll love Living with a SEAL.

SATISFIED READER!
By claudia Carroll
I'm a voracious reader, and Living with a Seal has prompted me to write my first Amazon review. Just finished the book. I feel like I'm owed $15 for having been a walking audio book over the last few days. I've retold so many of the crazy stories to my friends. Either to get a laugh or share the book's message: push yourself out of your comfort zone. Great to read a book that motivates me to grow and do more through humor and stories without getting preachy. 2 amazing guys with different stories and lessons. Enjoy it and learn!

Portishead's Dummy (33 1/3), by RJ Wheaton

An album which distilled a genre from the musical, cultural, and social ether, Portishead's Dummy was such a complete artistic achievement that its ubiquitous successes threatened to exhaust its own potential. RJ Wheaton offers an impressionistic investigation of Dummy that imitates the cumulative structure of the album itself, piecing together interviews, impressions of time and place, cultural criticism, and a thorough exploration of the music itself.

The approach focuses as much on the reception and response that Dummy engendered as it does on the original production of the album. How is that so many people have, collectively, made a quintessential headphone album into a nightclub album? How have they made the product of a niche local scene into an international success? This is the story of how an innovative, experimental album became the iconic sound for the better part of a decade; and an aesthetic template for the experience of music in the digital age.

one of the strongest entries in a good series
By jafrank
This is probably the single strongest book of the 7 or 8 I've read in the 33 1/3 series. Wheaton strikes an excellent balance between smart, wide-ranging formal analysis and open praise. His attempts to tease apart the individual sounds that go into making the dense, dark, beautiful world of Portishead's music made me rush back to listen to each track of Dummy over and over again, and marvel at just how remarkable their work is. But what is even more impressive is how he successfully shows the resonances between Portishead's music and broader trends in musical/cultural history. The way he hints at the remarkable, tangled web of connections; of technologies, people and geography, which operate both above and beneath our basic daily awareness and how much of Portishead's music does the same. The writing in this book is sharp, engaging and weirdly ominous. Kind of like 'Wandering Star.' I sincerely hope Wheaton writes more books in the future. The 33 1/3 series would be better as a whole if more people had Mr. Wheaton's wide ranging curiosity.

Standout in an Extraordinary Series
By Z. Stiegler
I'm a huge fan of the 33 1/3 series. True, some are hits, some are misses. RJ Wheaton's exegesis on Portishead's Dummy is absolutely in the former camp.

Wheaton artfully weaves background on the album's composition and production with biographical information, all the while making a point to put the album into context - of the times, of its peers, of its genre, of its influences and impact.

The best entries in the 33 1/3 series do two things. First, they make you want to listen to nothing but the album under review for at least a week. Second, they elicit a new appreciation for the album, regardless of how well you know it, or how long you've been a fan. Wheaton's take on Dummy accomplishes both.

A very good entry in the 33-1/3 series
By too_old_to_be_so_indie
I've read quite a few of the 33-1/3 series, and I think this is one of the best entries. It gives a great insight into the making of the album and also positions its creation within the greater musical trends of the time. My one disappointment is that the book presupposes the instance of a single "Bristol Scene" that existed around the time of this album; but the city is also important as home of two other scenes -- that of iconic indie label Sarah Records, and the more experimental sounds of the loose collective of musicians that included Flying Saucer Attack, The Third Eye Foundation, Crescent, Amp, Movietone, and others.
