Keep at it, Eugene!

To be vitally human there are a few authors one must read - Shakespeare, Plato, Rousseau, Alan Bloom and Eugene Hecht. With only limited exaggeration - notable among man's achievements is Hecht's new 4th edition of Optics. The first edition was the central (and only) text assigned in junior year optics for physics majors at many universities in the 1980's. As a near adolescent I was pleased by expert writing and well delivered humor in those far off years of college life.
The wonders of electromagnetics - which leads to everything in our modern age of electronics, radar, telescopes and computers - is beautifully clarified with clear pictures, concise description and completing examples in this new edition.
I hope Hecht lives to be a thousand such that the hundredth edition of Optics can enlighten people in the 31st century with as much joy and fascination as his 4th edition does today.
After so many years away I find Hecht there again to help me, not this time to peak inside the mind of nature but to make a living, and do so with added pleasure, knowing Hecht continues to improve the nearly perfect.

OK textbook, could have been better

I used this textbook for an introductory optics course. It was an average book. There weren't any examples in the core of the text, but fortunately the author did include worked solutions in the appendix for some of the end-of-chapter problems, which I used as examples to work from. Most of the questions that were answered were the easier ones, that anybody halfway intelligent should be able to figure out.

On the plus side, there were lots of equations and lots of description to help learn the material. Some sections were better than others. The sections on mirrors and lenses, for example, were wonderful; I never understood that stuff in high school, and Hecht made it all clear. The tables he had for the different types of lenses/mirrors and their properties were great. An example of a poor section was that on diffraction; I had no clue what he was talking about.

The book is a bit expensive, but overall it is alright; certainly better than some of the other books I used during my degree!

Great in combination with the Schaum's outline by the same author

If this book had to stand on its own I'd say it is a failure. The author is very good about explaining concepts. For example, he tries to make practical sense out of reflection, refraction, and the Fresnel equations via conversational examples in nature such as the "mirages" you see on highways in the hot summertime. Also, his derivations are quite detailed and complete. However, he works very few numerical examples. He just expects you to do so in the exercises with no demonstration by him on how to do it. As someone has previously mentioned, the subject of Fourier optics is spread all over the book in a completely disorganized manner.

So why am I giving it four stars? Because, unbelievably, it is the best optics textbook out there for those of us seeking an academic treatment and not some popular mechanics text. Also, the author has written an outstanding Schaum's outline, Schaum's Outline of Optics, that goes hand in hand with this book. They complement each other perfectly. Simply read a chapter of this book, go to the corresponding chapter in the Schaum's outline, and there the same author shows practical problems and their solutions.

If the author ever writes another edition of this text it would be great if he folded in some of the practicality of his Schaum's outline into this very complete but unpractical text.

Required reading

This was required reading for a Theology class.
The book was a good overview of Christianity as well as a few other religions. I think that it was more heavily influenced by Christianity/Catholicism, but as I was taking the course at a Jesuit university that was to be expected. Overall it was a thoughtful read and not bad for course reading

PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING THIS BOOK

I have never written a review of any product on amazon before. Usually I don't feel the need to give any negative reviews as many things are "point of view" and as a result I have always felt it wrong to give my "point of view" since its obviously my opinion. However, I am compelled to save people from making the mistake of spending money on this book. As the author of the book says "Let's Begin"

Susan Ellerbeck (the author) spends time in the beginning of the book discussing healthy eating, making healthy choices, eating from plant based sources and to AVOID processed foods. She discusses the "Standard American Diet" or SAD as she calls it which is to eat processed foods. It is these foods to avoid. She also discusses reading labels and avoiding eating any food that has ingredients you cannot pronounce. However on Page 18 of her book she makes the following statement:

"Good sources of fat and calories in the plant based diet would include any nuts or seeds, olives and olive oil, vegetable oil and margarine and plants like avocado's"

Now here is a typical ingredient list of "margarine". I chose a Smart Balance brand and looked up their ingredient list on their web site. This is the ingredient list: Oil Blend (soybean, palm fruit, canola, and olive oils), water, contains less than 2% of whey (milk), salt, natural and artificial flavor, vegetable Monoglycerides, soy lechithin, vitamin A palmitate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, Dl-a-Tocopheryl, Acetate (Vitamin E(), Lactic Acid, Beta Carotene Color, and Potassium Sorbate and Calcium Disodium EDTA)

In Contrast, here is the ingredient list of "butter": Pasturized Cream, Salt

Now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that whereas BOTH products have fats, Margarine is not PLANT BASED (notice the Milk, and chemicals in the margarine) - whereas butter is not plant based either, it is natural - the problem I have is telling people that eating chemical and processed foods is a "good source of fat".

On Page 29, Susan Ellerbeck also makes this statement:

"Those Veggie Burgers you enjoy or the tofu hot dogs you put on the grill in the summer are also going to fall under the heading of plant based food as well."

Again, both the veggie burgers (unless you make them yourself from your garden or organic supermarket ingredients) and the Tofu Hot Dogs are "PROCESSED FOODS" even if they are plant based, they are still processed and loaded with chemicals. Here is the ingredient list of "Smart Dogs":

Water, Soy protein isolate, soybean oil, evaporated cane syrup, pea protein isolate, tapioca starch, salt, potassium chloride, bakers yeast extract, carregeenan, dried garlic, natural flavor (from plant sources), natural smoke flavor, xanthum gum, fermented rice flour, gar gum, oleoresin paprika (color)

In this list we really need to look at the works "natural flavor" and "natural smoke flavor" - first, smoke is a gas, how did they capture that gas and make it into a flavor. Second the word natural is a way to hide all sorts of ingredients.

Both artificial and natural flavors are made by “flavorists” in a laboratory by blending either “natural” chemicals or “synthetic” chemicals to create flavorings.

All and All, I question whether Susan Ellerbeck is even qualified to be writing such a book.

The other very irritating thing about this book is its 86 pages in length which seems like a lot until you see the double spacing and the small size of the book. Several Chapters are literally 1-2 paragraphs long.

I tried to find any information about the author in the book and there is no introduction on the author, forward about the author, nothing about the author to identify her qualifications to be writing such a book. Nothing to indicate she is a nutritionist or anything. I am a littler concerned for the general public who may be genuinely wishing to learn about plant based diets and spending any money on this book.

I have been eating a whole food, plant based diet for about 2-3 years now and have spent many hours in research. I am not a nutritionist, however I feel I have more knowledge on this subject and there are much better and more accurate books out there.

You Call This a Book?

Don't waste your money! There is so much wrong with this product I don't know where to begin. The introduction is repeated at the opening of the first chapter - word for word except for one small paragraph. Chapter I, titled "Why Plants?" doesn't ever answer that question, and ends with this: "However, this leads us to another question, which is: 'Why Plants?'" Seriously? I found many of the chapter titles misleading, the amount of information pitiful, and some topics that were introduced were never mentioned again. Some information was repeated in other chapters. The product (I just can't call it a book!) is only 89 pages long and you have to repeat info? Many of the chapters fit on one page! Who would even publish this? I obviously need to take a closer look at what I'm buying. Terribly disappointing. For a great book on plant based eating, check out UnDiet by Meghan Telpner. Thorough, complete, educational and fun. If I had read this book first, I would have stopped shopping.

Great for beginners!

This book is exactly what it says it is, a book for beginners.

If you are new to plant-based eating, this book will teach you the basics, bust a few myths for you, and give you some meal plans and recipes to get you started on your way.

As someone who has studied plant-based diets, and has practiced both veganism and vegetarianism, it offered an easy read and a few new recipes.

A superb inroduction to the philosophy of medicine

This is an exquisitely written introduciton to diverse topics in the philosophy of medicine. Written by 2 physicians and a philosopher, the book lucidly describes and analyses topics such as rationalism and empiricism, causality, the ontological status of disease entities, and the value of social and hermeneutic approaches to medicine. Though the authors maintain a conventional-medical perspective, they avoid the typical pitfalls associated with the prevailing medical paradigm, such as an uncritical acceptance of logical-positivist methodology, the lack of attention accorded to subjective patient experience, the glorification of technology, and in general the subjugation of the philosophy of medicine to the practice of medicine, which immedicately robs such philosophy of its critical capacity. This book truly should be required reading for anyone associated with medicine in any way -- medical students, physicians, epidemiologists, medical scientists, historians of medicine, etc. Written with the general reader in mind, the authors explain basic philosophical concepts. But they go on to develop their themes with a sophistication rarely found in the philosophical literature about medicine.

About the Author

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish. Co-authors include Michael Ziegler, Marquette University; Thomas Kearns, Northern University; Charles Burke, City College of San Francisco; John Fuji, Merritt College; and Karl Byleen, Marquette University.

Michael R. Ziegler (late) received his B.S. from Shippensburg State College and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he held the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen.

Karl E. Byleen received his B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. He has published a dozen research articles on the algebraic theory of semigroups.

Long on calculus, short on applications

As an engineer, professor of engineering and high school mathematics teacher, which included teaching AP Calculus and Business Calculus at the High School level, this book was disappointing. It has too many calculus topics and very little discussion of how to apply calculus to real world problems, in business, and other areas.

For example, there is a very long discussion, over twenty pages, of l'Hopitals rule and its variations. Classic calculus books by Thomas, for example, cover l'Hopitals rules in three of four pages, and business applications books such as Larson's "Brief Calculus", don't even mention the topic.

Business and other students only need to learn how to take the derivative of a few, basic functions, and then, more important, apply the derivative concepts to finding, for example, the price that maximizes profits or revenues.

This is really a Calculus book, not a Calculus applications book. Picking the important topics out of the over six hundred pages is left to the teacher. No wonder most teachers develop their class notes from a few, selected, and most important topics from the typical, mathematics text books written today.

Oh, for the good old days when mathematics text books were a couple of hundred pages long and every page covered an important topic with good explanation and only a few, not a hundred and fifty problems, on each topic for the student to practice. This is not meant to criticize this book per se, it is typical of too many mathematics texts written today. Maybe some authors will be encouraged by this review to write a text for business applications that is truly a business applications book... Concise on mathematics topics and strong on their applications.

Comes in handy, but not exactly satisfactory

The solutions presented in this book are pretty clear and easy to follow, however, they only solve the odd numbered problems. Which is a bit of a disappointment because the solutions for the odd numbered problems are already in the back of the original text... So I'm confused as to why I purchased this. At least a fair warning mentioning that it's not a complete solutions manual would've been nice. Not a complete waste of money, but still a disappointment.

The development of extracorporeal circulation and the ability to perform surgery on the human heart is one of the greatest achievements of medical science in the 20th century. The extraordinary efforts related to the development of these highest forms of technology that we now enjoy are detailed in this book about the history of cardiac surgery by one of the leading cardiac surgeons in the United Kingdom. The book is interesting, and its approach differs somewhat from the usual historical treatments of medical topics. The method of presentation is personal and in many instances constitutes a behind-the-scenes approach filled with inside information and material conveyed in a somewhat spicy and controversial atmosphere, such as the description of the acrimonious details of the artificial heart saga that took place in Houston in 1968.

The book is unusual in its editorial organization. The first half consists of eight chapters that deal with separate aspects of the history of cardiac surgery. The first is an overview, beginning with the emergence of the idea of actually operating on the human heart and bringing us to the present, highly developed state of technology. The wonderment and forbidden nature of the heart throughout the ages are beautifully catalogued. Subsequent chapters describe the history of valve surgery, coronary bypass surgery, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, surgery for thoracic aortic disease, and surgical treatment of congenital heart disease. The author pays a bit more attention to the areas he is interested in, and thus, less information is provided on valve surgery, particularly aortic-valve surgery, but a great deal of information is provided on mechanical circulatory support, an area in which the author is an acknowledged expert.

The second half of the book contains facsimiles of seminal articles on cardiac surgery, such as the report of the first valve operation by Cutler and Levine in 1923 at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, and biographies of a select group of pioneers in cardiac surgery. Thus, half the book is text, and half consists of reproduced articles and biographies. There are also biographies in the text half of the book of other physicians who were instrumental in the development of specific areas of cardiac surgery.

The book is slanted toward the author's experience with physicians whom he has worked with and obviously admires, including John Kirklin, Denton Cooley, and Russell Brock, all of whom have had long and illustrious careers in cardiac surgery. But by and large, Westaby does incorporate most of the essential aspects of the history of cardiac surgery in the 300 pages of text.

It is a readable book, nicely organized and packaged. There are some errors in pagination in the table of contents and the subject and name indexes are incomplete. This entertaining book is a personal history of cardiac surgery. It offers a reasonably accurate, colorful account of one of the greatest advances in health care technology in the 20th century.

A very useful encyclopedic collection of history

The artificial heart implantation and the open heart surgery is one of the greatest achievements in medical sciences in the 20th century. It is a fight against the highest cause of death in the 20th century in which cardiologists and many other specialists achieved great innovations and efforts to treat. In this interesting book, Stephen Westaby is tracing the progress and the history of cardiovascular surgery from the discovery of circulation to state of technology artificial heart implantation in topical and chronological order. The book covers technical historical details concerning discovery of anatomy and physiology of the heart, discovery of cardiac diseases, the progress of treatment methods, the progress of technological methods and innovations of assistive devices for cardiac support. The book traces both technical and humanistic stories behind this progress. Stephen Westaby is a leading practicing cardiac surgeon in United Kingdom who and his team implanted an artificial assist to the longest living person with an electric heart pump.

To understand a little bit the purpose of the author in writing this book and the methods he used, we need to examine his history and biography. Professor Stephen Westaby (born in 1948) is a heart surgeon at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England. He won the award of Midlander of the Year in 2002. Westaby and his team performed Peter Houghton's heart operation in June 2000, implanting a Jarvik 7 artificial left ventricular assist device, a turbine pump. Peter Houghton (1938 - 2007) became the longest living person with an electric heart pump in the world (Wikipedia). From this biography, we can see that Dr. Westaby is not a specialized historian, but a clever and significant figure in surgery. This gives us an impression of the reason of writing this book in this broad encyclopedic way as a reference in cardiac history. He didn't mention explicitly his purpose in writing the book which is a weakness but it is probably that as a cardiologist he wants to show the impact of his career on humanity and pride this progress as part of it. He may also stimulate his colleagues and students to follow the leaders in that field and to be part of the discoveries and inventions.

The book is exploring in all directions the progress in cardiology in all its branches. It is centered on inventions and discoveries by category, tracing the history of each. It doesn't concentrate on one aspect or field but shows a broad view of the history in a pure technical aspect. The book chapters are arranged topically then chronologically. Therefore the chapters are not sharply arranged in one aspect but a rough combination of both, starting with the topical arrangement. The book is divided into 8 chapters topically. Each chapter describes the history of one major part of cardiac surgery; cardiopulmonary bypass, congenital heart defects, valve heart diseases, thoracic aorta, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and the first chapter is a special introduction about ancient discoveries of the circulatory system and some other general topics related to cardiac surgery. At the end of each chapter, the author mentions a dozen of biographies related to the chapter topic. The other half of the book contains the original copies of articles and journals about cardiac surgery as well as more biographies and names index.

The book is very suitable for all professionals in the field as it requires prior knowledge in cardiology and its terms and it gives them the encouraging history about their profession. It is a good reference for surgeons, cardiologists, physicians, medicine students or biomedical engineers. It is very technically written, and therefore the unspecialized readers like historians will need to search for many uncommon medical terms and might be able to progress in reading without understanding cardiology deeply. It might have been possible to add a list of definitions to broaden the range of readers to include unspecialized readers may be historians or cardiac patients who are probably interested in this research or engineers who may be interested in studying this significant progress in technology and its effect on humanity.
Generally speaking, the author's writing style is divergent between literary style and technical scientific style and story narration including narration of the lives and deaths of patients who participated in the discoveries of cardiovascular diseases and treatment. Here are some key features of his writing in this book.

The author writes in story narration style with lots of interesting behind the scenes stories and humanistic stories of patients not just operations and discoveries. In chapter 5, "Surgery for coronary artery disease", he starts by narrating the story of confusion of diagnosis of angina and the lost relation between angina pain and the coronary artery disease and the confusion between aortic diseases and coronary artery diseases. He mentions the patients' names who participated in the discoveries of the relation between angina and coronary artery disease and their death stories and dissecting their bodies.
The author inserts some non scientific literary style to the text to give it some soft touch. In chapter 7, "The beginnings of cardiac transplantation", he didn't start directly with the traditional first heart transplantation trials, but instead he started with a verse from the bible about the Lord changing ones heart from stony heart to a heart of flesh. A symbolic verse but he wonders if it is prophetic about heart transplantation and the stony coronary and valve calcification! He then mentions a legend about a Chinese doctor who swapped a number of internal organs of 2 soldiers who awoke 3 days later. And he spoke about Cosmos and Damian, the patron saints of surgery, who replaced a cancerous leg of a white man with another black one found in a cemetery. He also talked about the heart as the seat of soul and emotions and intellect according to Aristotle and the ethical issues concerning the transplantation.

The author gets related topics from the far history not just the 20th century related topics. In the first chapter, he started by narrating the mysteries behind the discoveries of the heart anatomy and physiology and the historical mistakes and the liver being believed as the natural spirits and the heart as the seat of the soul.
Regarding methodology, the author didn't mention clearly his research methods and reasons which is another historical weakness but it is clear that he collects data from historical archival journals and scientific articles and keeps a copy of each of these sources in the second half of the book. Most of the book is written in the author's own words more than referencing. His use of references is not uniform and do not follow a defined way. References are not shown inside text; instead they are mentioned in the second part of the book by chapter which is a little bit confusing and sometime you don't find the source of information clearly.

The book uses different methods of development.
1. Narration: The author narrates the stories of cardiovascular progress history. He narrates events concerning: discovery of cardiovascular diseases, progress of diagnosis; the relation between diseases and causes , progress in noninvasive treatment, progress in surgery
2. Description: The book is full of illustrative elements: (a)diagrams of historical anatomy, (b)photos of surgeons and cardiologists, (c)photos of patients who where a key factor in discovering and testing new treatment methods, (d)copies of original pages from journals and scientific articles, (e)photos of related ancient paintings, (f)photos of tools and devices and historical equipments that were the pioneers of their type.
3. Quotation: inside the text the author inserts significant quotations of famous cardiologists and physicians and sometimes philosophical sayings and verses from the bible.
4. Original copies: of journals and scientific articles which are very useful and interesting for the reader because some of them are very old and significant.

There are many points that make the book interesting and attractive to choose. The book title "Landmarks" is an attractive expression rather than "History" or "Progress" despite the word cardiac isn't very suitable and should be cardiovascular to include vascular diseases. The book starts with ancient history of discovering cardiac anatomy and physiology rather than just the common start from the twentieth century which gives the book a deep historical taste with many rare anatomical diagrams from ancient eras. The text is not boring and quite readable due to the diverging collection of interesting historical quotations, photos, diagrams and biographies that are inserted in an interesting manner between small portions of text. The author writing style is also attractive due to his divergence between literary style and technical style and narration style as mentioned before. Also the addition of copies of the original articles is not common and adds an interesting material to the book to further read in addition to the main text which is characterized by wealth of information.

Though the many interesting points in the book, it has some weaknesses. References to the historical data and biographies are not clear. For example in chapter one, the author describes the history of discovery of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology and mentions clearly the dates and names but without a footnote or endnote reference. The endnote references for chapter one do not mention these historical data. As there is a divergent and wealthy amount of data, I think there is a need to add a graphical timeline depicting all landmarks collectively by date in the book introduction or in each chapter to show the big historical picture more clearly and to summarize the dates and events in one diagram. The table of contents needs more structuring or adding hierarchal numbering of subtopics to give the reader a big view of the subtopics inside each chapter instead of searching manually or inside the alphabetical index for a certain subtopic. The subtopics in chapter one are not consistent; "Between the great wars", "Antibiotics", "Progress in closed cardiac surgery". There is a need for clear organization of the subtopics either topically or chronologically or a clear combination of both. And sometimes you feel that because the divergent nature of the book, it is little bit confusing specially that the author did not mention a systematic way of gathering information from references and articles.

How does the book contribute to the history of cardiovascular surgery?
When searching in amazon.com, I didn't find a similar book that discussed thoroughly the history of cardiac surgery in this broad view. There are some books which discuss the history of one part or may be the twentieth century technology starting in the fifties. This book is distinctive in its careful tracing of as old events as it can trace through rare articles information. This book is also distinctive in providing the original articles "as it is", which is very interesting to read the cardiologists papers from the beginning of the century and how they thought about it. I think this book is an important and interesting addition to everyone who is interested in the big picture of cardiac history but it is not a deep or specialized explanation of a certain field history. The book did not add something new to the history but it is a well organized collection of articles in the author's words.

In Nonna's Kitchen is Carol Field's recording of the lives of some of these women and the food they cook. Whether they live in the countryside, in a small town, or in a big city, their dishes are specialties found only at home, where everything is made from scratch and it does not matter if a favorite recipe takes hours or days to make. As the title indicates, these women's stories are as important as their food. Putting the two together, Field captures both the essence of the Italian spirit and the soul of Italian cooking.

Field, author of the authoritative The Italian Baker (LJ 11/15/85) and Celebrating Italy (LJ 11/15/90), has written another winner. Because modern times are making la cucina della nonna (traditional "grandmother's cooking") a lost art in Italy, she wanted to record those recipes and the way of life they reflect before both disappear. Field interviewed almost 50 nonne, whose stories are told in individual profiles throughout the book, and collected some 200 recipes from them. Most of these resourceful women spent much of their lives creating meals for huge families out of just a handful of ingredients, and there are many simple but mouthwatering dishes here, along with some more elaborate and even exotic ones. Field's headnotes and profiles of the nonne make this book fascinating reading, and many of the recipes she offers are not found elsewhere. Highly recommended.

Grandma Knows Best!

For lovers of Italian food in particular, but for any lover of cooking and Italy, this is a must have for your collection. Every recipe is preceded by an introduction to the Nonna (Grandmother) whose speciality it is. These Nonnas run the gamut, from sophisticated Roman and Florentine women to women from small villages, still cooking as their own Nonnas did. I've tried several of the recipes and each has been spectacular. I'm buying another copy to take as a gift for a week-long 60th birthday celebration at a villa near Sienna. Ciao!

I loved my Nonna...and I love your Book

When my mother gave me this cook book, and I saw the word 'Nonna' in the title, I got a little choked up. I also whispered to myself, "this better be good." Well...'Bravo! Ti hai fatto bene!' You have done well. Yes, the recipes are wonderful, but the mood, the stories, the history of each of these Nonnas made me smile, and made me proud. Just as in my Nonna's cooking, these ladies are the best at turning leftovers into elegance. Wonderful subtle flavors - Crostini, Polpette, the Chocolate Ameretti Pudding...all we need is a deck of cards for Scopa! I made my Nonna write down her sauce recipe for me, because if I didn't, it would have died with her, recipes are verbal traditions handed down for generations...this is cooking history. Thank you. My wife thanks you too...books like this motivate husbands to cook more often.

Delicious and Delightful

This is the second of Carol Field's books that I've read (the first one I picked up was "Celebrating Italy") and her hallmarks seem to be meticulous, yet loving, research and a writing style that manages to evoke the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and flavors of Italian cooking to a mouth-watering degree.
"In Nonna's Kitchen" is a cookbook that Field researched by going to Italy and culling time-honored, taste-tested recipes from several authentic Italian grandmothers. I have not yet tried any of the recipes, but reading them feels like good eatin'. I usually dislike cookbooks that don't feature a picture of every recipe. "In Nonna's Kitchen" contains no pictures of food, but the recipes and Field's writing on Italian cuisine and culture make pictures unnecessary.
Ah, yes, culture. It's easy to see Field not so much as a food writer, but as an eager and loving student of Italian culture. She does much honor to the Italian grandmothers who contributed to this book by providing a lengthy, colorful profile of each of them. In these profiles, the "nonne" discuss how they learned to cook, what their lives have been like, how cooking has changed over the courses of their lifetimes, etc. In addition to these formal profiles, Field includes little anecdotes about several of the grandmothers within the recipes they provided.
These are not your stereotypical black-shawled, muttering Italian grandmothers, either. They range in age from 40s-90s, and a good many of them are classically beautiful, stylish women. All of them, however, are quintessentially Italian in that they place great importance on good, simple food made from the freshest local ingredients.
I plan to buy copies of "In Nonna's Kitchen" and "Celebrating Italy" for myself; they're too good not to own. Carol Field now has the distinction of being my favorite food writer!
