Some background may be useful here. Jerome, the translator of the Vulgate around 400 A.D., who is considered the greatest Hebrew scholar of the late Roman Imperial age, wrote the following in his De Viris Illustribus (Of Illustrious Men):
"Matthew, also called Levi, apostle and aforetimes publican, composed a gospel of Christ at first published in Judea in Hebrew for the sake of those of the circumcision who believed, but this was afterwards translated into Greek though by what author is uncertain. The Hebrew itself has been preserved until the present day in the library. at Caesarea which Pamphilus so diligently gathered. I have also had the opportunity of having the volume described to me bythe Nazarenes of Beroea, a city of Syria, who use it. In this it is to be noted that wherever the Evangelist, whether on his own account or in the person of our Lord the Saviour quotes the testimony of the Old Testament he does not follow the authority of the translators of the Septuagint but the Hebrew. Wherefore these two forms exist "Out of Egypt have I called my son, " and "for he shall be called a Nazarene."
It is apparently unknown whether this Hebrew Matthew is the original of which Jerome wrote, but the possibility exists that this is the earliest Gospel of all. Considering the close relation of Hebrew to Aramaic, the language would in that case be the closest to Jesus' own.

This beautiful translation of the preservation of a Hebrew version of the Gospel According to St. Matthew is a much needed account of an overlooked document. Arguing persuasively that although the document we have now dates from the medieval period, it is highly probable that it has its roots in an original Hebrew manuscript. With plenty of subtle changes compared to the standard Western version we use in the 21st Century, this illuminating book is a much needed light on Jesus' Pharisaic Jewishness.

Adult/High School–Buckhanons second novel firmly establishes her as a timeless voice for a new generation. The point of view alternates between 15-year-old Shivana Montgomery and that of her unborn baby. The two are tied together by the idea of young black women who are used and then forsaken by men. Shivana plans to abort the baby, whose father is a married drug dealer now in jail, but then she meets a man who makes her want to try to live a happy life, one that includes the child. The narrative of the unborn takes readers back in time through several generations of black women during the periods of slavery, Reconstruction, and Harlem in the 1940s. An authenticity of language and action permeates the novel. The realities of poor Chicago life and Shivanas desperation to escape lead to a sad, seemingly predestined conclusion, yet do not detract from the underlying foundations of love and hope. The best in the trilogy

Don't want to write too much because I would give away the plot. I once heard a man from the South Side of Chicago point out a likely unwed mother on Cottage Grove, a well known street in Chicago. Sounded like he was mad at her, but madder at the society that gives young people few hopes. The protagonist in this book could have been that young woman. Kalisha does an incredible job sketching this kind of young woman. We get to meet, too, the adults surrounding her who did their best, or could have done better, to change the outcomes of her life.

The end was so unexpected ! I really loved the way this book was written, the imagery was pure poetry! The story was both familiar and completely foreign, it made me feel both comforted and uncomfortable all at the same time! Looking for more from this author.

My Perception

This was beautifully written but at times troubling to read. The author's voice seemed to echo through the pages and dominate the protagonist's journey. You have a 15 year-old who speaks to the reader with such wisdom and intellect coupled with ignorant dialogue and actions. It was too two-dimensional. This was a worthy soul-searching effort written uniquely with a disheartening deeper meaning, but didn't trump the author's first effort, Upstate in my opinion.

An intriguing insight into the powers of solitude - the powers of connecting with yourself free from distraction and free from agenda. This book is a beautiful tale of self-discovery and transformation. Sutter takes us on a journey from a lost young man, caught up in alcohol and sex, to a man who stops, reflects, and questions arguably the biggest question - why? Along the way he reflects on relevant topics from ego, envy, competition, love, sex, alcohol, relationships, society, community and ties it seamlessly, and cleverly, with mindfulness and Buddhist practices. He does so in a bold yet refreshing way. This book is essentially about happiness, and how we can easily attain it. If you want to learn the tools to be happier and freer in every moment - I recommend reading this book.

This book came along just when i needed it. It was a great read and really made me look at my life and where it was heading. Even speaks the truth and coming from a simular background i could understand where he was coming from. I taught me to step back and look at my life and make some changes before it was to late and i remained on a never ending cycle of material items and self satification at any cost. A read read and i would recomend to anyone who is questioning their life and why they are here

This book has come along at a perfect time for me. The journey of personal development/discovery is universal. The interesting characters, adventures and insights make for enjoyable reading. But there is an honesty in the words which promote thought. It was a shame when I finished the book, but it has inspired me to look a bit deeper. We could all use a little solitude.

This history of the Middle Ages has it all--thematic consistency, sufficient background to set the stage, logical chapter organization, fascinating detail that illustrates the major themes, impeccable and felicitous writing style, even perfectly chosen maps and illustrations. This volume is intended as a textbook, but anyone with a modicum of interest in where we came from (and might be headed!) will be fascinated with it. It's especially effective in documenting East and West influence. If you want insight into contemporary Muslim-Christian-Jewish interaction, read this book! One thing for sure--you'll never refer to the Middle Ages as the Dark Ages again!

With just weeks remaining in his 180-day tour of Vietnam, Navy SEAL Gene Michaels hopes he will live to see his pregnant wife again, but he thrives on his dangerous missions. In fact, he feels his service will be incomplete if he does not eliminate a North Vietnamese Army "enforcer," one Col. Nguyen, who has brought terror to South Vietnamese villages. His determination redoubles after his best friend dies in a Nguyen-led ambush. Intensifying Michaels's despair is the likelihood that the team was sold out by a Vietnamese interrogator whom he had offended. But finding Nguyen, while a high priority for the U.S. war effort, does not postpone any other missions. Michaels and his team are "inserted and extracted" literally every day, entering impenetrable jungles and engaging numerically superior forces. In what is to be their final mission, for example, Michaels leads his team of seven against Nguyen and a division of 5000 North Vietnamese regulars. But even this explosive "op" does not prove as deadly as the mission Michaels volunteers to join a day before his tour is up. With neither the Bible-reading Michaels nor anyone else reflecting on the war itself, the players are rather thinly developed, and the plot, nominally the search for Nguyen, is weaker as a result. Vietnam veteran Wentz draws on his own wartime experience with the Navy's toughest commandos for an exciting, unnerving, no-frills war novel. Working in small, tight, self-contained units, the Navy's SEAL (SEa, Air, Land) commandos took on dangerous, dirty little jobs requiring stealth, strength, and flawless cooperation. Wentz and Jurus successfully re-create the manic intensity that characterized SEAL operations at their height during the Vietnam war. They follow Seaman Gene Michaels through a dozen or so operations as he serves the latter half of his first hitch in the war zone. Deeply religious, married, and soon to become a father, Gene is seen as something of a good-luck charm by the rest of his unit. As long as he has been with them, they have made it out of every hair-raising operation unscathed. Gene credits God with the safe deliveries- -until his faith is tested with the death in battle of his best friend. Popping amphetamines, the young commando goes on a sleepless 12-day hunt for the North Vietnamese colonel he holds responsible for his friend's death. The title refers to the SEALs' practice of painting their faces before their sorties, providing camouflage and scaring the wits out of anyone unfortunate enough to tangle with them. Even Chicks Love Men in Green Faces

I don't normally write book reviews, but I read a ton of military/history books, and this has to be one of my all-time favorites. I couldn't put it down! It was a fast-paced, action-packed, personal account of Gene's experience with his team as Navy SEALs in Vietnam. It was well-written to the point that you felt you were right there in the action with these guys. There were some light-hearted moments, but thankfully no flowery stuff. Having grown up in the 70s as a kid, I really don't know much about the Vietnam War, and I feel like this book has given me some perspective. A great read, and highly recommended.

Worth a Look

It's an easy read, keeps you interested. I would recommend it unless you are looking historical info. What I liked is that it wasn't a whole lot of charts or maps or ten different location with names you can't pronounce so you can actually get a feel for what they are doing. Stays with the same core of guys too. Some of these types of books had so many players in them and different agencies that it is hard to keep them straight. Funny to see how the old timers did it as opposed to the newer generation.

A lot of people love this old book, and I'm no exception. It's definitely worth your time to read this. This puts you in the jungles of Vietnam where a squad of men can discreetly take on the VC and NVA in the enemy's own backyard. Discipline, brotherhood, team, all as it should be. It keeps me re-examining my own level of preparedness and pushes me to do common things uncommonly well, and be ready to stand corrected and improve.

About the Author
Louise Simmers received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in education from Kent State University. She has worked as a public health nurse, a medical-surgical nurse, a coronary care nurse, and an instructor of practical nursing and diversified health occupations. Louise has received the Vocational Educator of the Year award and the Diversified Health Occupations Instructor of the Year Award for the state of Ohio.

Karen Simmers-Nartker graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She has been employed as a nurse in telemetry step-down and in medical, surgical, and neurological intensive care. She is currently employed as a shift coordinator in an open-heart intensive care unit. She has obtained certification from the Emergency Nurses Association for the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and from the American Heart Association for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). In her current position as charge nurse in an ICU, she coordinates patient care and staff assignments; manages interpersonal conflicts among staff and/or patients and family members; is responsible for ensuring quality care to meet the diverse needs of patients and/or family; actively participates in in-services to evaluate new equipment, medications, hospital services and supplies; and teaches and mentors newly employed nurses.

Sharon Simmers-Kobelak graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with a bachelor of business administration degree. She is currently employed in the educational publishing industry as an integrated solutions specialist. In this position, she assists instructors at private career schools in finding appropriate print and digital materials for classroom instruction. Sharon also provides in-service training for instructors on using digital assets and instructor and student resources. She achieved President's Club status for two years, number-one representative status for one year, and has repeatedly achieved quota in her 20 years in the educational publishing industry.

Amazing Book

I love this book out of my whole college education working towards my nursing degree this is by far one of the most valuable book I have purchased. Even if I didn't pursue nursing I would have loved to have had this book just to read. The information in it is so much that anyone will be able to find it valuable to have. Will not be selling this one back!

Dont purchase!

I was told by three separate associates that this would have the access code and guess what? Three times it came without one. I had to spend 200 dollars to get it from a textbook place by campus.

Goes without saying

What a wonderful idea to write a book about what everyone thinks goes without saying! It needs to be said. Practical things like keeping your floors clean and being on time are essential if you want the people attending your yoga classes to keep coming back as it's far cheaper to hold on to a customer than to find a new one. These practicalities, however, are probably not included in all yoga teacher trainings.
On top of the basic facts Gudjon Bergmann adds bits and pieces on how you can make it work for you, like how you can turn doing the floors into a spiritual practise or what you can do during the time slot between arriving early and when the class starts. With that understanding doing the "chores" becomes a win-win situation.
I have tried most of the things in this book for my yoga teaching and I strongly recommend it. Some of the things have also proved to be very useful for other teaching I do and for my work as a wholistic practitioner.

The first time I met the author, Yogi Shanti Desai, I did not know the meaning of Yoga, nor did I know the many types of Yoga. I had already begun to teach myself some asanas, but I did not know their value. The benefits of practice reach deeply into the various parts of the body and then to the interior of one's being. I felt the benefits at last, when I read and used this practice manual. I learned to visualize each movement before I practiced. The pictures in the Practice Manual help the student of Yoga to choose and visualize which set of routines he or she wants to use each day. Visualization of the (Asanas) or positions, are accompanied by breathing exercises which offer benefits that are clearly explained. Knowing and seeing these provide more senses for appreciation of each movement and its effect produced in the body. (First Printing, 1978)
