Learn to think differently about the world
By Corey Malone
I loved this book because of the way is presents ideas. Even though some of the the ideas we already know about, the implications of those ideas for the world is really fascinating. It provokes a different way of thinking about the trends and technologies in the world that you will find yourself updating social media in the same fashion. It is a great book to try and gain a difference perspective on your own work even indirectly.

[Before purchasing this book, you may request a FREE, FULL-COLOR, DIGITAL PREVIEW EDITION OF THE ENTIRE BOOK, by writing HughMartinHumanOdyssey at Gmail dot Com.] * This book is the main text of the advanced version of the authors' landmark, two-volume study of Human Development,The Human Odyssey (B&W interior). (For most readers, the one-volume Quickstart Version is the better place to begin their explorations of this unique, new perspective on human life.)****FROM THE PREFACE:

  • THE MEANING OF LIFE.
  • What is the Meaning of Life? What makes life significant? What gives life purpose? Where are we headed -- and why? How can we live our life to its fullest potential? *YOUTH. If I am young, and starting out my adult life, what paths are available for me? What should I value most? What choices will make the best use of my talents, my interests, my ideals, my aspirations? *MIDDLE YEARS. If I am in my middle years, what have I accomplished thus far? What have I missed out on? What new joys do I hope to experience, while I still have time? How can I immerse myself in a life that is deeper, more meaningful, more rewarding? *MATURITY. If I am older, and approaching my later years, what have I achieved that is truly enduring? What good have I done? What legacy of wisdom, self-knowledge, or material comfort will I pass along to succeeding generations? How can I use the insights and perspectives of a lifetime to make these years the richest and most satisfying of all? *** In the course of our life, are we just plodding relentlessly toward our own demise? Or are we in fact progressing toward some higher, more ennobling goal? Are we, like Forrest Gump, just a feather floating through a vast field of purposeless change? Or are we, like Odysseus from Homer's The Odyssey, on a great and significant Life Journey - a Journey from Infancy to Eternity, a Hero's Journey?
  • KEN WILBER & JOSEPH CAMPBELL.
  • Thanks to the work of two great men, we are now in a position to explore systematically the Meaning of Life from a developmental perspective. From philosopher and systems theorist KEN WILBER, we have learned that Life is all about Human Development. Through Wilber's famous AQAL MODEL, and his more extended THEORY OF EVERYTHING, we have further learned that all the multitudinous strands of Human Development are in essence the same sequence. From scholar and mythologist JOSEPH CAMPBELL, we have learned that much of the greatest literature and myth describes the Soul's journey through the vicissitudes of Life -- our HERO'S JOURNEY. Through Campbell's famous HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES, and his more extended MASKS OF GOD, we have further learned that all the multitudinous Hero's Journeys are in essence the same Story.
  • ADAPT & THE LIFE JOURNEY.
  • When we spin out all the details and implications of Ken Wilber's AQAL and Theory of Everything, we arrive at an all-inclusive Model of Human Development we call ADAPT - a model consisting of five major conceptual Domains, with seven or more Sectors within each Domain. When we spin out all the details and implications of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, we arrive at an all-inclusive mythic story we call the LIFE JOURNEY ARCHETYPE - a Story which is told likewise through five overarching symbolic Domains, with seven or more Sectors within each Domain. *** When we compare the extended versions of Wilber and Campbell - when we trace the parallels between our ADAPT Model and our mythic story of the Life Journey - we find that in essence the two are the same. The ADAPT Model describes in abstract or conceptual terms the various factors that result in Human Development. The Life Journey describes in symbolic or mythic terms those same factors. This Journey of the Soul through the Stages of life - this Journey which can be described either through conceptual or mythic terms - is what we call THE HUMAN ODYSSEY...

Review
CONCEPTION FOR HEAD & HEART."I must say I'm blown away by this theory. It's a conception that satisfies both my head & my heart - a fascinating new way of viewing human behavior that at the same time is relevant to the practical concerns of my daily life..."
***NEW MODEL, NEW FORMAT."This is a FANTASTIC BOOK!I GIVE IT 10 STARS ON A SCALE OF 5!!!I don't use superlatives often, but this book actually is 'fantastic' -- for two reasons:1) The book presents a terrific new model of human development.2) It presents that model in a terrific new way." -- IntegralWorld.net

AN IMPRESSIVELY COMPILED, HANDS-ON TOOL FOR SELF DISCOVERY AND GROWTH."A comprehensive primer for understanding human development that will engage the reader in a most thoughtful exploration... a most engaging, fun, provocative and illuminating way to explore the complexities and meaning of one's life journey."
-- Sally Thomason, author ofThe Living Spirit of the Crone: Turning Aging Inside Out

A CASUAL STROLL THROUGH MY OWN INTERIOR"The bestcomparison is my travel guide to France from DK Publishing. In the section on Provence, for example, each pair of facing pages is laid out like a collage - with different sections on towns, countryside, history, food, inns, art, etc. - all interlaced so I can browse easily from one topic to the other, just like I would do if I were wandering the byways of Avignon or Saint Remy.Like my travel guide,The Human Odysseyescorts me on a casual stroll through my own interior -- with the experience of actually 'being there'..."-- IntegralWorld.net

From the Author
The following comments from readers best express my own intentions regarding this book:
***LIKE A COMPANION VOLUME FOR A PBS MINISERIES."When I first came uponThe Human Odyssey, I didn't quite know what to make of it.The book had come highly recommended by a friend, and yet it didn't fit into any convenient niche. Is it penetrating academic study, like Thomas Kuhn'sThe Structure of Scientific Revolutions?(The book features two of the foremost thinkers of our time, Ken Wilber and Joseph Campbell.)Is it a lavish art book, like the Getty Foundation'sSymbolism in Art?(About half the book is devoted to stunning works of art, engaging photos, and hilarious cartoons.)Is it a sensitive self-discovery book, like Julia Cameron'sThe Artist's Way?(Each section is accompanied by detailed exercises (called 'Personal Explorations') that enable the reader to apply a given concept in their own life.)
The answer is: All of the above. But the book also reminds me of another popular genre. It's like those companion volumes that come with any new PBS miniseries -- books like Jacob Bronowski'sThe Ascent of Man, James Burke'sThe Day the Universe Changed, or Joseph Campbell'sThe Power of Myth.Like those books,The Human Odysseycovers a vast sweep of ideas and is full of thought-provoking insights, yet it's also replete with illustrations and asides that make it easy to get into..."-- IntegralWorld.net
***NEW MODEL OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, NEW WAY OF PRESENTING IT."This is a FANTASTIC BOOK!I GIVE IT 10 STARS ON A SCALE OF 5!!!I don't use superlatives often, but this book actually is 'fantastic' -- for two reasons:First, the book presents a terrific new model of human development.Second, it presents that model in a terrific new way.

  • New Model."The new model presented in this book is called ADAPT - short forAllDimensions, AllParticipants, AllProcesses, AllPathfinders,Together. In a nutshell, this model is a blueprint for life.It tells me where my life has been, where I'm going, and how to navigate some of the major hazards I'll encounter along the way.As a prescription for living a life that is rich and rewarding, this model truly is 'fantastic.'It's been a major help in my counseling practice and my relationships with colleagues. For my wife, it's shown her new ways to teach her elementary school class and to enlist the enthusiastic support of parents and administrators. For both of us, it's been a big help in our marriage and a big influence on how we raise our kids...
  • "How did the authors come up with this extraordinary new theory?Evidently, by combining the work of two great modern thinkers, Ken Wilber and Joseph Campbell. On the Wilber side, they began with all the features of human growth from Wilber's famous Theory of Everything (AQAL+) fromIntegral Psychology: Levels, Lines, States, Quadrants, Self, Types, and so forth. On the Campbell side, they began with the 17 steps from Campbell's classic Hero's Journey: The Call to Adventure, Belly of the Whale, Road of Trials, Meeting with the Goddess, Atonement with the Father, Ultimate Boon, and so forth. Then (and this to me is the brilliant part) they introduced these two great men to each other (figuratively speaking, of course) and brought them into dialog!...
  • New Format."Rather than the tedious, mind-numbing prose of many scholarly studies, rather than the cheery and vapid encouragement of many self-help books, rather than the simplistic generalizations of many popular bestsellers, the authors have devised a method of presentation that speaks to the reader simultaneously from several different perspectives and on several different levels of depth and significance...
  • "So how do the Martins do this, especially with a subject as complicated as human development?Well, to begin with, the book is printed in ravishing color on a huge 8x11 oversize format - so each two facing pages present the reader with a vast and engaging visual expanse, where lots of diverse information can be presented without clutter.Where feasible, each concept of human development is shown on its own two-page spread, and each such concept is presented in six different ways -- - conceptual, symbolic, visual, structural, analytical, and experiential.
  • "The closest comparison I can think of is my travel guide to France from DK Publishing. In the section on Provence, for example, each pair of facing pages is laid out like a collage - with different sections on the towns, the countryside, the history, the food, the country inns, the art, the walks, etc. - all interlaced in a reader-friendly format, where I can browse easily from one topic to the other, just like I would do if I were wandering the streets and byways of Avignon or Saint Remy.Like my travel guide, a book likeThe Human Odysseyconveys the experience of actually 'being there'..."-- IntegralWorld.net
***MY TRUE POTENTIAL AS A CREATIVE."ADAPT has woken me up to see my true potential as a creative. "Right now I am going through the young adult stage--trying to form an identity independent of my parents. This is probably one of the scariest stages because there are so many decisions to make with not a lot of life experience--yet.ADAPT has made me realize this stage is natural and the only thing you can do is let the growth happen--not stunt it or deform it in anyway through any compensations or your own imagination."-- Olivia G., College student.Santa Rosa, CA
***DEMYSTIFIES THE BIG QUESTION."Within a masterful framework, overlapping two of our greatest "pathfinders," Ken Wilbur and Joseph Campbell, Hugh Martin explores the complex journey of human growth and makes the wisdom of the authors and the processes of the journey highly accessible and enjoyable. As Judith Blackstone demystifies how to become enlightened in her book The Enlightenment Process, Hugh Martin demystifies the big question that all of us carry, "What is the Meaning of Life?"-- Rebecca C., Actress, Life Coach.Sayulita, Mexico
***YOUR REAL COMMON CORE."Being a teacher, I ask myself why this isn't part of required curriculum for every student -both young and old.In the new rush to pursue Common Core, what could be more commonly at every person's core than a deep longing to know your unique calling and a compass to navigate the labyrinth of choices.Personally I wish this complete manual of life was around when I was taking all those wrong turns, going through rough transitions, and passing up opportune moments of truth. This book's journey is definitely humorous, poignant, scary, and exhilarating. One feels you could read this book for a lifetime and still find layers of unexpected and meaningful treasure..."-- Kaye C., Teacher, City Council member.Sonoma County, CA
***ROADMAP TO THE INEFFABLE."The book is an effective demystification of life's most relevant questions. As demystification goes however, the book succeeds in becoming quite mystical. Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the convoluted systems of a modern world? Does the daily grind seem purposeless and impossible? Pick up Mr. Martins book, it is a roadmap to the ineffable..."-- JayJay, composer/musician, San Francisco
***ARCHETYPES OF THE SOUL'S JOURNEY."The best part is the usage of Joseph Campbell's seminal works to weave the stages of development into a journey of the Archetypes. Archetypes are of course, means through which we express our deepest-seated desires and life callings. It is by their force that we move through the stages of human growth, so Mr. Martin's inclusion of them is beautiful and visionary...." -- Patrick D., CEO, import company.Colorado Springs, CO.

From the Inside Flap
PROLOGUE: REPRIEVE FROM DEATH.A book on the Meaning of Life?In our pragmatic and skeptical age, this seems like an absurd and pretentious notion.Yet, deep inside us, these are the questions we all ask:What is life all about? What gives life meaning and purpose? How should I live my life, and why?In an attempt to address such questions, author Hugh Martin describes his own personal journey -- a Hero's Journey that leads ultimately to the book you are now reading:
"Why is life so precious to me?Why have I spent so many years pondering what it means to be alive? When you hear my answers to such questions, dear reader, you will understand how I came to write a book likeThe Human Odyssey. To begin my story, I'd like to take you back to my early years at Esalen Institute -- that fabled growth retreat on California's Big Sur coast...
.The Magic of Esalen.

  • "I first discovered Esalen in the Spring of 1965, just three years after its founding. At that point, I was in a chronic state of shock.I had recently been diagnosed with advanced-stage Hodgkin's Disease lymphatic cancer, and given just two years to live.To make the best of my last days on earth, I had dropped the intensive stress of graduate school, and traveled via Berkeley to California's rugged Big Sur coast in search of a new life. With my young wife (a 'Joan Baez with curves') and baby daughter, I settled into a little cabin in the redwoods, only accessible in mid-winter by an undulating suspension footbridge over a raging stream. From there, my family and I commuted to Esalen Institute, for volunteer work developing the grounds of the new growth center.
  • "While at Esalen, we meshed with the Esalen community, and plunged into the Esalen experience - brutal hotseats with the infamous gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, soul-stripping encounter groups with the tough-but-caring Will Schutz, graceful Tai Chi ballets with Yoda-like Gia Fu Feng, exuberant dance, pounding drums, soothing sensory awareness by the hotspring mineral baths, mind-searing acid trips on windy ridge-tops, free sex, savage fist fights, and group hugs."
The Siren Call.
"One particular episode of my tumultuous Esalen experience stands out above all others -- what I call my 'Siren Call.'Here is how I remember it...
  • "On a chilly, misty morning I approached the rickety little farmhouse on the bluff. The Esalen yard crew had just left for their day's chores, and the little building was deserted. From the eaves, god's-eyes twisted in the wind, and Tibetan prayer flags fluttered in the breeze. The tinkling of wind chimes welcomed me as I stepped cautiously across the creaky porch.
  • Inside, a weathered oak dining table littered with the remains of breakfast - half eaten sausages, scraps of cinnamon roll, a syrupy plate. On the chair, a gauzy tie-dye shirt and one scuffed huarache.A tattered poster of Gentle Wilderness high country taped to the fridge, snapshots of a gaudy party with faces pressed toward the camera -- a faint, lingering smell in the air of damp leaves and fresh-smokedsinsemilla.Despite the clutter, the scene bathed me in warmth.I felt a glow of excitement, of anticipation, of mystery.Driven by who knows what urge, I sought to experience at least vicariously a lifestyle I'd been too timid or too inhibited to adopt.
  • "By the wall, on an album cover next to the phonograph turntable, the pale, chiseled face of a cool, hard-edged young man stared out at me:Not challenging, just waiting for me to make my move.I placed the needle on the scratchy record, flipped the switch, and the turntable began to spin. From the speakers came the croon of a hollow, poignant, nasal voice - echoing as if from a far distance:
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
  • "I listened and lingered, becoming more and more transfixed. As I immersed myself in the music, I was ravished, entranced, enchanted, enthralled. My eyes watered, and my lungs released in a burst of exhilaration.Chills ran up my spine and flowed out my fingertips. As I continued to listen, the sound gushed through my system, soaking the parched landscape of my soul, awakening buried longings, kindling my spirit.I felt a surge of aliveness, a chorus of hope, a great welling-up of the Everlasting Yes!
  • "I didn't know it at the time, but that of all Esalen experiences was the pivotal moment that changed my life. For the first time, like Odysseus tied to the mast, I was hearing:The Siren Song of the Growth Continuum.Unknown to myself, I had decided to relinquish my fears and doubts -- to toss caution to the soft sea breeze, to follow the Tambourine Man deep inside me, to take the chances necessary in the quest for true happiness, to yield myself to change and growth when every fiber of my being yearned for it.In that short moment, my cancer began a grudging retreat.I had decided to live."
Blessings In The Shadow Of Death.
"My Esalen experience was just the culmination of a wrenching path of self-discovery that had begun about a year earlier. My shocking wake-up call came as a devastating physical and emotional collapse -- a breakdown that obliterated the safe, predictable world I had known.I call it the 'Great Fever.'
  • The Great Fever.
  • "When the Great Fever came, it came with a violent, torrential rush.A raging, searing, brain-frying, stormy blast that brought agonizing groans for relief. When the fever hit, I'd been recuperating from a grueling graduate school semester at the home of a dear aunt in tree-lined suburban Chicago. It wasn't a good place to get sick.My aunt was already distraught. My dear 97-year-old Grandpa - for all his life the mighty oak that sustained and supported the family - was crumbling and fading fast in the upstairs guest bedroom.
  • "With Gramp dying upstairs, I began to die below. When I became sick, the only place for me was a little cot in my aunt's dank basement - amidst dusty boxes, chattering pipes, and an old ringer washing machine that throbbed in my ear. There I lay - tossing, and sweating, and moaning - with Susan (my first wife) trying to comfort me, while tending our one-year-old baby. With the fever raging at 105 for almost two weeks, and the dawning recognition that this was no ordinary flu, they finally checked me into St. Luke's Hospital for extensive tests.
  • "When the results were in, Susan sat gravely by my bedside. It didn't look good. The lymph node biopsy had revealed cancerous tissues - virulent Hodgkin's Disease.Worse yet, the lymph nodes were engorged and corrupted throughout my whole body - indicating that the cancer had spread too far, and was incurable.I was given two years to live.
  • The Reaction.
  • "Once I got over the initial shock of my situation, and went into temporary remission, I began changing my plans. If I had only two years to live, I certainly wasn't going to spend them in the stacks of some musty library - and I certainly wasn't going to suffer through any more icy Midwest winters.Anxious, confused, and desperate, I groped my way toward a new path:With whatever moments I had left, with whatever strength and hope I could summon up, I would learn to drink deeply of the best life had to offer..." [continued]

Still needs time in the oven.

Page 1 states; "This is a pre-publication proof and review copy of this book, and is not intended for general sale." This is a fair caveat emptor for the readers and purchasers of this book. The authors have taken on a daunting task as they attempt to synthesize and expand the writings of Joseph Campbell and Ken Wilber. In the book they present a 369 page pastiche of pop-culture images juxtaposed with key elements of Campbell's and Wilber's work, along with their very broad-spectrum concept ADAPT (acronym - All Dimensions, Participants, Processes, Pathfinders, Together)
and invite the reader to connect the dots.

My impression, as a long time student of both Campbell and Wilber, is that this book is in the incubative, preliminary, and work-in-progress stage of development. In the foreword the authors invite the constructive feedback of this books early readers (published 2014). Your input may assist the process of this worthwhile endeavor.

beautifully illustrated, (sometimes funny—sometimes transcendent)
By ESPT
Hugh and Amalia Martin have taken what here-to-fore has been an interesting but rather academic exploration of human development and created a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, (sometimes funny—sometimes transcendent), workbook for an individual to not only know, but to grow “thy self.” The Human Odyssey is an impressively compiled, hands-on tool for self discovery and growth. It also provides a mechanism for counselors, therapists and teachers to help clients and students understand and independently expand their knowledge of and experience with, what it means to be human.

When I first opened the workbook I felt a bit overwhelmed by what seemed to be a rather complicated and daunting schematic of color coding and layered charting. But this impression was immediately softened by the very specific advice to "not attempt to read the book cover to cover, but to set aside some uninterrupted time for study and reflection. Nibble on one small section at a time. Savor it. Chew it thoughtfully. Allow ample time for assimilation and digestion. . . .Read for Fun. Read for Insights. Read for Understanding.”

I followed this advice and since I am personally going through one of those life transitions, went immediately to “developmental stages and transitions”, which I know fairly well from my own research and experience. The Martins’ grounding in the academic and professional literature is obvious. Their succinct, jargon free statements come alive with wonderful, arresting illustrations ranging from comic strip to fine art. Not only do they engage both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, the workbook is designed to access the various learning styles different individuals employ. One of its finest features is a series of provocative questions at the end of each section—extremely well designed and if thoughtfully answered, illuminating.

The Martin’s integrative approach, beautifully frame life’s Odyssey by combining Ken Wilber’s analytical brilliance in tandem with Joseph’s Campbell’ insights from mythology and Jungian archetypical understanding. It is a comprehensive primer for understanding human development that will engage the reader in a most thoughtful exploration.

However, a thorough exploration by the reader of the whole content of the workbook will be essential. Although the “dip into your interest at first,” is valid as a delightful introduction, readers should be encouraged to realize that if something does not fit their situation, they must dip deeper. For example, the charts that outline developmental stages are presented as lock-step standards within traditional western culture, which do not fit everyone. There are successful individuals that choose or are thrown onto a different path. Later sections in the workbook address impasses and challenges and offer methods to overcome obstacles in order to experience restorative growth. It would be helpful if this was made clear from the beginning.

Knowing that this is an introductory copy I look forward to the updated version of the specific processes that facilitate the individual “hero’s” journey (pg 171) and a fuller exploration of ways to deal with cultural variants (pg. 100), although I like that the workbook format challenges the individual to be involved in his or her solution.

The Human Odyssey is a most engaging, fun, provocative and illuminating way to explore the complexities and meaning of one’s life journey.

This book is a "keeper" for a very long time...
By Barbara Hamaker
What an amazing accomplishment. The authors have provided us with what I would call a reference volume about becoming human. It covers such an extraordinary range of possibilities for self-discovery that wherever the book 'opens itself up to' you can find information and insights into your own journey, whatever it may be. Everything is there. Wonderful illustrations, cartoons, graphs and charts of all kinds make the volume of material fun to read, keeping me interested and laughing while at the same time learning about all the possibilities for self-discovery. This book is a keeper for a very long time.

Love and Agony
By Linda Ulleseit
At the end of book one, I was dismayed to learn that Uriah hadn't fixed everything! His despair echoed within me as I immediately began to read Shaxoa's Gift. In this one, Uriah is rescued from a well of despair when he is given a slim hope that he can break Claire's bond with her Twin Soul. I enjoyed Uriah's time with the Shaxoa even though the whole monster Matwa thing was getting a bit old. Throughout this book, I rooted for Claire and Uriah, who continue to be excellent empathetic characters.

This was one incredible series consisting of 3 books all as good as each other. Very hard to put down, very good moral story even if it is fiction

Slow, but emotional
By Amy Braun
Pretty good, though I think I liked the first novel better. While it was engaging to watch the characters struggle and see how precious their love was, it was almost overwhelming. That said, I enjoyed how the danger seemed to be secrets rather than physical obstacles. It made for a much more complicated story. There were a few twists, though I saw some of them coming. It was a slow-paced story, but I liked the ending and how it will lead up to what promises to be a heart-crushing conclusion.

Perfect for learning game programming and concepts etc.
By Quinma
I just finished reading and coding from all 678 pages of Mario Zechner's and Robert Green's book Beginning Android Games 2nd edition and I wanted to give others insight into my findings about the book.
http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Android-Games-Mario-Zechner/dp/1430246774/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1360183484&sr=1-1&keywords=beginning+android+games+2nd+edition

First off I would like to say that I am completely satisfied with the purchase of this book.
I was attempting to write my first games based off random blogs and articles online and I was totally missing many important concepts and wasting time.

Also, please note this is not a LibGDX book. I actually bought it thinking that it was but I learned way more than I ever knew in creating a custom framework.

Usable for Beginners [9/10]
Yes if you have never made a game before this book walks you through every step of the way. If you have never or have very limited experience on programming then I do not think this book is for you since games are a rather more advanced form of programming.

Readability [10/10]
This book is written in a light helpful tone that really holds your hand the whole time. It made the experience fun and sometimes funny.

Grammer and spelling mistake proof[8/10]
There are a few mistakes in this book, sometimes even the code is incorrect. Using the mode [...] uses with a book bug bounty might pay off and keep amazon from getting a % of your profits.

Correctness of Concepts[10/10]
I am not a professional developer however I do my research and I have found no faults with this book. And the best part is with every simplification of a concept the book informs and encourages you that there is much more to this concept and you can look it up with suggested readings.

Exampled and provided resources [10/10]
Every example, image, sound, etc. is provided free of charge in one quick usable location.

Closing Comments: After reading this book can you go out and create a top selling android app? probably not. However, this book does open your eyes to the world of creating apps. After reading the whole book I feel motivated and inspired that I can create a successfull app but at the same time I understand that this is no small venture and it will take lots of time, sweat, and bloodshot eyes. Before I was sailing blind and this book did exactly what I expected it to do, it gave me a bearing. All in all I am happy and I would buy any other game programming books released by these authors. In particular I would like to see a very short and concise LibGDX book which assumes you have read this book first.

Personal Comment: I dont believe I am alone in this but most of us programmers became programmers because of a good game got us hooked. I like many others write business software everyday and while I am happy, creating games fills me with hope. So I would like to thank, Mario and Robert for teaching me and Google for the low barrier opportunity to get started in the world of games.

Good game design primer, but was this edited?
By Chunky Bacon!
I've been programming for a number of years, especially with Java (since the first public beta release). Still, Android development was somewhat of a mystery to me. I thought this book would provide a fun way to get into the mobile scene, which it did.
The content is rich with great, concise explanations of some gaming theory, how graphics and audio actually work along with pragmatic code.

What I liked most about this book is the author doesn't want to produce a bunch of "copy/paste" programmers. I did find some errors in both code examples and grammar. I imagine some have been frustrated by non-working code when following examples. If I was a "beginner" there are things I know I wouldn't have figured out easily.

Overal, bravo to the author.

I am glad that I bought this book
By iOn81nAxl
I was already familiar with how to create a game using the SurfaceView using the documentation and online articles and became skeptical as to whether or not I should have bought this book. So far I have read the first four chapters. The book assumes you are going to make a game with a canvas, loop, update, and render methods even though simpler games can be designed using the Android UI elements and event based handling of updates.

I am glad that I bought this book, but recommend reading the Getting Started guide on the Android Developers website first as it explains more detail as to how Android works. It should help you read the book faster and you can probably read the majority of the Getting Started guide in one or two days. The authors are experienced and explain things clearly and straight to the point. You may also learn some good architecture design.

Images Poorly Managed
By Greg H.
This review is specific for the Kindle edition. I have used the paper back version for years and found it well done and very useful. All the details are present in the Kindle edition as before, and the images are also present and well done. The problem is you can't look at the labeled anatomy and the label definitions at the same time, which renders the book useless. I am giving two stars because the information is all there, if you can trick the system. I have to read with two electronic devices, my iPad for the images and my iPhone for the labels. Also, on the computer Kindle version (Mac), the images cannot be enlarged, so here I sit with a 27" display and little micro images of anatomy, actually smaller than on my iPad (the images can be enlarged on the iPad). So, it is a very good book in printed version, but sub-optimally implemented in the Kindle edition.

Very Bad electronic edition.
By challis sweeten
This edition was a huge waste of money. It is extremely hard to navigate through the pages and the labeling for the images are very small. You also have to flip through pages to find the actual name for the anatomy. I would never get this book again on the kindle/ipad.

The Power of Meaning: Crafting a Life That Matters, by Emily Esfahani Smith

In a culture obsessed with happiness, this wise, stirring book points the way toward a richer, more satisfying life.

Too many of us believe that the search for meaning is an esoteric pursuit—that you have to travel to a distant monastery or page through dusty volumes to discover life’s secrets. The truth is, there are untapped sources of meaning all around us—right here, right now.

To explore how we can craft lives of meaning, Emily Esfahani Smith synthesizes a kaleidoscopic array of sources—from psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, and neuroscientists to figures in literature and history such as George Eliot, Viktor Frankl, Aristotle, and the Buddha. Drawing on this research, Smith shows us how cultivating connections to others, identifying and working toward a purpose, telling stories about our place in the world, and seeking out mystery can immeasurably deepen our lives.

To bring what she calls the four pillars of meaning to life, Smith visits a tight-knit fishing village in the Chesapeake Bay, stargazes in West Texas, attends a dinner where young people gather to share their experiences of profound loss, and more. She also introduces us to compelling seekers of meaning—from the drug kingpin who finds his purpose in helping people get fit to the artist who draws on her Hindu upbringing to create arresting photographs. And she explores how we might begin to build a culture that leaves space for introspection and awe, cultivates a sense of community, and imbues our lives with meaning.

Inspiring and story-driven, The Power of Meaningwill strike a profound chord in anyone seeking a life that matters.

Living a life that matters through the "four pillars" belonging, purpose, storytelling and transcendence
By Julee Rudolf
John Stuart Mill's words provide a perfect summary of the message of this book (p 16), "Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means, but as itself an ideal end."

In the introduction, the author shares her experiences with Sufism, her "parents ran a Sufi meeting house," then proceeds with the chapter that was the most fascinating to me as the parent of an introverted, deep thinking senior in high school, The Meaning Crisis, chock full of philosophical ideas and a discussion of suicide. One of the most disturbing facts in the book (and one I used in an article entitled Let's Unstigmatize Thoughts of Suicide) that comes from the CDC (p 22), "Each year, forty thousand Americans take their lives, and worldwide, that number is closer to a million." I'd imagined that the higher rate of suicide in developed than undeveloped countries had something to do with Maslow's Hierarchy, but Ms. Smith suggests the possibility that (p 23), "it is particularly distressing to be unhappy in a country where so many others are happy."

She follows this with four chapters corresponding to the pillars that support her message:
Belonging (p 49), "We all need to feel that we belong..."
Purpose (p 90), "a purpose-driven person is ultimately concerned...with making the world a better place."
Storytelling (p 104), "our storytelling impulse emerges from a deep-seated need all humans share: the need to make sense of the world."
Transcendence (p 133), "first, our sense of self washes away along with all, its petty concerns and desires. We then feel deeply connected to other people and everything else that exists in the world."

At that point in the book, I expect the conclusion or epilogue, but it's not to be. She includes a chapter entitled Growth, in which she puts forth (p 162), "The idea that we can grow to lead deeper and more meaningful lives through adversity." It supports Nietsche's contention (p 162), " “What does not kill me makes me stronger," with examples in support of it about persons who have gained strength from dealing with difficult circumstances, and a second additional chapter, Cultures of Meaning (p 192), "All across the country...people are using the pillars as a means to transform the institution in which we live and work, creating communities that value and build connections, celebrate purpose, provide opportunities for storytelling and leave space for mystery," which I think should have been the conclusion. Instead, Ms. Smith concludes with a discussion of death (p 217), "Contemplating death can actually help us, if we have the proper mindset, to lead more meaningful lives and to be at peace when our final moment on earth arrives," using research on those contemplating physician-assisted suicide to support the statement.

Best of the book: excellent research, anecdotes, interviews and other information in support of the idea that living a life in service of others, "Crafting a Life That Matters," helps bring meaning to humans and leads to happiness. Most chapters and arguments are very strong, like Chapters 1-5 and 7 (which seems like it should have been the Conclusion), the others, less so. Even though the story starts strong and finishes less so, it is definitely worth the read to remind us all that our society's materialistic, social media-heavy, happiness-seeking culture is the wrong path to happiness. On similar subjects: 10% Happier by Dan Harris, Coming Home by Dicken Bettinger and Natasha Swerdloff, and Listening is an Act of Love by Dave Isay.

When good storytelling meets the science of positive psychology
By Terni Paolo
The book illustrates the psychological research about the importance of living a life filled with meaning in an elegant narrative filled with thought-provoking stories. It is a joy to read and it will make you ponder about your life.

Meaning is one of the 5 ingredients of flourishing according to Seligman's PERMA theory of well-being (Positive emotions, Engagement, positive Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement; see the book "Flourishing"). Yet this dimension has been largely neglected in books inspired by positive psychology — until now. In this book Emily Esfahani Smith does a great job in illustrating what researchers have found regarding the importance of finding meaning in one's life, and why that matters.

As other reviewers noted, the author identifies 4 main pillars that lead to the sense of living a meaningful live. They are the following: a sense of belonging; a sense of purpose; a coherent and positive life narrative; and a sense of self-transcendence.

What makes this book stand out is the elegance with which the author is able to condense the science in an unobtrusive framework that informs and organizes the narrative - but that does not get in the way of the good storytelling which makes the book so inspiring. The reader will be introduced to stories and characters that will let him or her ponder about their own pursuit of meaning.

Two chapters in particular stood out for me: "the meaning crisis', because the struggles of Will Durant, Camus and Tolstoy that the author highlights have universal appeal and got me thinking about my own life and my own mentors; and "cultures of meaning", because it opens up a social dimension to what I always thought of mostly as an individual pursuit. As Emily Esfahani Smith points out, if we fail to provide positive answers to the need for belonging, purpose, storytelling and self-transcendence, then people might gravitate towards destructive solutions (e.g., ISIS) that paradoxically fill those human needs.

If you are looking for a book that is solidly built on science and yet reads almost like fiction, this is it.

PS: and for the psych geeks out there, no worries, the "Notes" section is pretty thick!

By martin bello
I am someone who has experienced a dark night of the soul, and wrestled with the question of the meaning of life. I spent years studying philosophy, psychology, and particularly the works of Viktor frankl, who pioneered a form of therapy called logotherapy, to address the quest for meaning. I believe that as time goes on Emily Esfahani's book, "The Power of Meaning" will be recognized as one of the most profound contributions to the issue of how to find meaning in life in our present time. The book is a pleasure to read, and will be a life saver for many people.
