The Bone Hunters: The Heroic Age of Paleontology in the American West, by Url Lanham

"Highly recommended to all scientists and non-scientists interested in paleontology and the West." — Science Books

A century after the founding of the Republic, the United States was a leader in the science of vertebrate paleontology — the study of the fossils of backboned animals. In this lucid, nontechnical study, a noted popularizer of science and former curator at the Museum of the University of Colorado first reviews the geology of the western United States and provides an overview of American paleontology since the days of Thomas Jefferson.
Dr. Lanham next focuses on the paleontologists themselves and the astounding fossil discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of vertebrate evolution. You'll learn how nineteenth-century paleontologists struggled against hostile Indians, scorching summers and frigid winters, loneliness, isolation, lack of funds and other hardships as they excavated tons of fossil bones from beds and quarries in South Dakota, Kansas, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and other areas. While many eminent scientists are profiled, including Samuel Williston, John Bell Hatcher, Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, and Joseph Leidy, much of the book is devoted to the explorations and achievements of Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. These two brilliant paleontologists, whose discoveries revolutionized the discipline, eventually became bitter rivals and the central figures in one of the most notorious scientific feuds of the century.
These and many other aspects of 19th-century paleontology are covered in this fascinating and readable book. Easily accessible to the layman, The Bone Hunters will appeal to any reader interested in the behind-the-scenes drama and inspired scientific fieldwork that resulted in an explosion of knowledge about the nature and evolution of the prehistoric animals that once roamed the American West.

The Bone Hunters: The Heroic Age of Paleontology

Professional Rivalry gone wild!

If you are expecting to learn about digs and dinosaurs, you may be surprised by this book. Although this is a good history of American digs and findings, the author focuses more on the paleontologists and explorers than on the prehistoric things they found.

If you thrive on stories about business psychology, office politics, and cranky Victorian-era paleontologists, this may be your cup of tea. The search for fossils and dinosaur bones led Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh west to dig the prehistoric bone beds of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Their contributions to science and the field of paleontology were massive, and laid the groundwork for modern studies and superb museum and academic collections.

This is not an adventure story. It is the story of the network of Gilded-Age paleontologists, with an emphasis on the rivalry between Cope (of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia) and Marsh (of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale).

The book may inspire you to look for the the serious-minded A&E documentary, "Dinosaur Wars," on the same topic.

"Bone Hunters" a very thorough and readable book. I will incorporate some of this material into my Westward Expansion/Gilded Age lesson plans for HIS 112. What could be better than throwing dinosaurs into the mix?!

As has been pointed out, this book is not so much about now-extinct mammals and dinosaurs in the American West as about the men of the 19th century, especially rivals O.C. Marsh and Edward D Cope, who discovered and classified them. However, it should be noted that the book was written in 1973. Which accounts in part for its low resolution B&W photos. More importantly, it reflects the thinking toward dinosaurs prior to the so-called "dinosaur renaissance" that has taken place in the last four decades.

Philosophy of Fearism: A First East-West Dialogue, by R. Michael Fisher

This book is about a new philosophy that takes a specific focus on see the critical historical and everyday importance of the nature and role of fear in human existence. We seem to be at a time when fear has taken the lead and we are not yet able to understand it and manage it well enough. It is causing major problems from wars, to terrorism, to deterioration of our institutions which are operating in a culture of fear. Our health is deteriorating under the excess of fear in the world today. No other philosophy, not rationalism, existentialism or pragmatism etc., has given this focus to fear as does the philosophy of fearism. It is an original synthesis of an Eastern philosophy of fearism (developed by Desh Subba, from Nepal) and a Western philosophy of fearlessness (developmed by R. Michael Fisher). The book brings forth their unified vision of a Fearless Age that awaits humanity if we better learn how to manage fear and teach about it with a new lens. Subba calls this a fearist lens, and Fisher calls it a fearlessness lens. Together, working independently for the past 20 years, they each have recently met to collaborate on this global project and movement as "one philosophy of fearism." This is an essential text for leaders, students, parents, professionals and diverse people. Although it is not a self-help book, is goes deeper into helping our entire societies transform their relationship to fear and fearlessness. A must read for those who love philosophy and thinking critically about the 21st century.

to say something is rooted in our DNA seems like it is a capitulation to a fatalistic acceptance of ...
By Emmett A. Coyne
FEAR is universally pervasive, not only geographically, but it penetrates all levels of human consciousness, unconsciousness, and endeavors. As has been noted, and many would accede the point, fear seems to be rooted in our DNA. DNA is certainly a modern category that seeks to identify the locus of what might be innate to humans. But, to say something is rooted in our DNA seems like it is a capitulation to a fatalistic acceptance of the ways things are. If our view, however, of the human person is dynamic, and not static, then fear need not be the bogey man in our human psyche that holds us prisoner.

This work, The Philosophy of Fearism, seeks to bring to human consciousness how fear might be brought up from the basement to the living room., from the dark to the light, from an airless, stagnant place to fresh air space. When in the light it can lose some of its power to control, and cause us to wonder how we might better manage fear so that we are less the victim, more the agent.

This work is a milestone in an east/west conscious consideration of fears many facets. By examining it together we can perhaps become more the subject than the object of fear. The West’s colonialization of ideas can create a blowback. We can be negatively impacted by our isolated analysis. An east/west dialogue allows us to consider how others perceive fear. This is a vital plus as it provokes us to think, reflect beyond the confines of our particular box, to view in a new light.

The authors provide us with a ‘new’ vocabulary relative to fear, all of which allows us to be less victimized by fear, to view fear as a force that can be managed. Until recently, fear has been like sex, omnipresent, but which too often the impulse seems to keep us dangling. Sex education has tamed the balky beast. If sex education has allowed persons to manage it for a more holistic life, ought not fear education which these author are promoting, integrate fear in the pantheon of our being? This work will cause one to have new thoughts, considerations about fear, and how its DNA need not necessarily be a negative, unmanageable beast. Again, knowledge liberates.

Confessions of a Born-Again Pagan, by Anthony T. Kronman

In this passionate and searching book, Anthony Kronman offers a third way—beyond atheism and religion—to the God of the modern world
“An astonishing, . . . epically ambitious book. . . . An intellectual adventure story based on the notion that ideas drive history, and that to dedicate yourself to them is to live a bigger, more intense life.”—David Brooks, New York Times
We live in an age of disenchantment. The number of self-professed “atheists” continues to grow. Yet many still feel an intense spiritual longing for a connection to what Aristotle called the “eternal and divine.” For those who do, but demand a God that is compatible with their modern ideals, a new theology is required. This is what Anthony Kronman offers here, in a book that leads its readers away from the inscrutable Creator of the Abrahamic religions toward a God whose inexhaustible and everlasting presence is that of the world itself. Kronman defends an ancient conception of God, deepened and transformed by Christian belief—the born-again paganism on which modern science, art, and politics all vitally depend. Brilliantly surveying centuries of Western thought—from Plato to Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant, from Spinoza to Nietzsche, Darwin, and Freud—Kronman recovers and reclaims the God we need today.

Review
“An astonishing, . . . epically ambitious book. . . . An intellectual adventure story based on the notion that ideas drive history, and that to dedicate yourself to them is to live a bigger, more intense life.”—David Brooks, New York Times (David Brooks New York Times)

“Classical theists, atheists, and agnostics alike would be foolish not to take seriously the complex argument of this immensely erudite, rigorous, and readable essay in ‘pagan theology.’”—Miroslav Volf, author of Flourishing:Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World (Miroslav Volf)

“Confessions of a Born-Again Pagan is a monumental and profound achievement in re-enchanting the world by embracing the religious sensibility of such ‘heretics’ as Spinoza and Nietzsche. But the book is also a re-enchantment of philosophy. With immense erudition Kronman has restored philosophy to its classical role of addressing the innermost concerns of human existence and humanity’s ongoing struggle to reconcile itself with the world.”—Moshe Halbertal, author of Maimonides: Life and Thought (Moshe Halbertal)

“An extraordinary work of scholarship. There is no comparable work of such universal ambition and theological depth.”—Jos Casanova, Georgetown University

(Jos Casanova)

“Anthony Kronman’s Confessions of a Born-Again Pagan is a big book about the largest of themes—theology and philosophy, science and psychology, ethics and politics, friendship and art. It is above all an attempt to work out a coherent and attractive theology suited to the modern world. It takes up questions of the deepest human importance and is beautifully written. A rich and ambitious work.”—Michael J. Sandel, author of What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets
(Michael J. Sandel)

“The book diligently provides…an intellectual history of neo-paganism and a commendable attempt at navigating the practical ethics of what a post-Christian society would look like.”—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

About the Author

I see some have complained that this book could have been written years ago. That may be true but it wasn't. I took a number of philosophy courses in College--that was 65 years ago, and for the first time I understand Kant, thanks to the author.
The book can be difficult and the mind can't wander while reading it.
I found the reviews of different authors in a sensible sequence entertaining and quite educational.

By Spiritually Inclined
This is an extraordinary book - a sweeping, brilliant analysis of the evolution of the modern dilemma between religion and atheism. It is a masterwork, and offers deep and persuasive insights into the spiritual anomie we find ourselves in today. With beautiful passages on religious philosophy, science, art, literature, politics and more, this is a must read for anyone who is looking for spiritual guidance in the modern age.

Summarized perfectly most of my last years readings and Great Courses
By Gary
The author at the end of this book makes an apologetic like statement after 'having taxed the reader's patience with a long and abstract book....'. This is one reader who was never taxed and fully appreciated the author's abstract thoughts. Most books that I enjoyed as much as this one turn out to be dense and difficult for me to recommend since they are hard to follow but this one was a pleasant read while at the same time dealing with somewhat complex ideas and was able to tie together most of the books or Great Courses I've read or listened to over the last year (2016).

Slightly over a year ago I ran out of popular science books and came across Martin Heidegger's Being and Time. That opened my eyes to the value of primary source books on thinking and the nature of being. Instead of reading books or Great Courses about the famous philosophers or schools of thought, I started to branch into the works of the great thinkers themselves.

The author realizes that their has been a 2400 year old conversation around the intelligibility of the universe and the world we live in. He starts with the pre-Socratics and he's going to end the discussion with Walt Whitman.

The author wants to bring Joy back into the world by taking away our sense of entitlement and giving us Gratitude by re-introducing Pride. The author really doesn't like 'nihilism' and is going to argue that the world is eternal and divine making his 'born-again' paganism more than just pantheism and wants to bring back mystery. He even justifies this by embracing 'patriotism', and I would even say that he would not agree with the sentiment 'there but for the grace of God go I' because he puts the responsibility only on the individual and he'll even say that we are under 'the stupor of political correctness' today and that's what Nietzsche was getting at. The author is clearly an anti-humanist and anti-modernist and not particularly pro-Enlightenment and loves his Edmund Burke (Burkeian Bells always go off in my head when conservatives quote Burke, and it's clear this author is a conservative but one who doesn't believe in God putting him in a corner of sorts nearly alone), and he's got a weird Freudian psychoanalytical streak (just look up 'breast feeding' in his index, btw, that index is one of the best I've ever come across. I love a good index, and that is a good index!). All the things within this paragraph are major themes within this book, and for which I tend not to agree with whatsoever, but I still would recommend this book strongly because of the way the author puts all the pieces together and for how the book overlapped with my last years reading list so closely and allowed me to put the great thinkers into a proper context.

To fully understand why this book is so cool I'm going to relate it to some of my last years reading. I was concurrently reading A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years and I was completely lost on the meaning of Christianity. It wasn't the fault of the book, after all it was a history book, but Anthony T Kronman gave me the necessary insights. He'll explain how it was Augustine who will create a 'necessary' God because the Christian God is a creator God and Pelagius tries to sneak in human behavior and prayers making a difference to God. The Catholics side with Augustine and his concept of 'free will' for the next 800 years meaning that our salvation comes through Grace. This argument is going to play out through out the middle ages up until Thomas Aquinas and then William of Ockham will try to have the last word on it by disagreeing with Thomas Aquinas by declaring that nothing is necessary for God and the universe must be contingent because God is omnipotent.

The author is going to take the argument up to Luther and the reformation. In 2016 I had been reading many different books related to this but the author was able to tie them all together for me because the books (and Great Courses) were only focused on one particular aspect of the situation, this book tied them all together for me.

Also, last year I focused on 'being' and 'ethics' and 'metaphysics'. I had read various works by and on Aristotle such as his Metaphysics, The Nicomachean Ethics, Masters of Greek Thought: Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle and a general book on Greek Philosophers, The Dream of Reason: A History of Western Philosophy from the Greeks to the Renaissance. Each of these were enlightening in their own way, but this book, "Born-Again" made it such that I no longer recite Aristotles' four causes from memory now I realized what he really meant and his causes just flows naturally out of me. This would not have happened if not for this book, and I now realize why the species (form) of Aristotle is such a problem for understanding a God who must know of the individual.

I'm being somewhat presumptuous in calling the author an anti-humanist, but it was clear to me. The author was definitely more interested in Heidegger Martin's post Being and Time work. I have just recently reread Being and Time and it's clear that Heidegger takes an anti-humanist position after Being and Time. Heidegger tries to bring the mystery back into the universe and hearkens back to the Greeks of the Iliad with their 'truth as disclosure' and curses the 'dehumanization of man' because truth gets equated with 'correctness' (what the post "Being and Time" Heidegger would call the 2000 year mistake). This book "Born-Again' defends that Heideggerian position and the excellent Great Course lecture that I listened to last year, Modern Intellectual Tradition: From Descartes to Derrida shows how Heidgegger took an anti-humanist turn.

The author really likes Spinoza and Nietzsche and will step the reader through their major works and what they are really getting at. Last year, I read Spinoza's Ethics, and Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. I loved Spinoza and relate to him. Nietzsche clearly reworks Spinoza but takes out Spinoza's humanism. That's why the author probably prefers Nietzsche in his 'born-again paganism'. Spinoza has the formulation God is Nature and Nature is God, but he also allows for a panentheistic (the universe is alive and is God) interpretation, in Ernest Holmes's The Science of Mind which I also read last year he's got a similar formulation or at least to the point where he would say "the man who thinks is God, and God thinks". The author, Kronman, will in detail describe Nietzsche's 'rank order of being', "a picture of the world that organizes a larger order of it in accordance with its own principle of interpretation is more powerful and therefore real than the viewpoints it incorporates in itself". This leads to Nietzsche's view point of "perspectives". Something worth understanding and for which this book does a superb job at. Also, since I do like learning and sharing, Nietzsche would say that everything that is wants to maintain what it is and always wants to take that which is around it (a quick summary of 'will to power', but the author really does a good job at explaining this).

Part of understanding where the author is coming from is by seeing who he doesn't talk about. He'll barely mention Soren Kierkegaard, Hegel G W F or Parmenides. Last year I read, Fear and Trembling, Phenomenology of Spirit and Parmenides by Plato. Each of these thinkers go against what he's trying to show. Kierkegaard would have the answer Kronman is looking for in his Knights of Truth and how we each must take our own stand based on ourselves, Hegel brings spirit alive by having it become aware of itself, and Parmenides would cause the most difficulty for Kornman to resolve because the author despises relativism (he'll use the word 'nihilism') but he really wants is to bring the necessary, the certain, and the universal back into the world, but he can't do it with God and Revelation because he rejects those two things.

Parmenides gives us the block universe of Einstein. The author Kornman states what he really is trying to do is take Einstein's formulation of the God of Spinoza and bring intelligibility to the world itself through adopting the eternal, divine and using science. This is definitely a problem I had with this book. The author really didn't understand the philosophy of science and its issues and I would recommend the pedantic and dense book Philosophy of Science: The Central Issues, one of my all time favorite books which I read last year, but would be reluctant to recommend because it is a tough read. BTW, Ludwig Wittgenstein is barely mentioned, in his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus he will say there is no structure to the world, but that would go against what the author is trying to say.

I haven't yet got to Kant Immanual. Last year I just finished his Critique of Pure Reason and that is a recurring character within this book. He does one of the best jobs explaining what it means in the context of his world view. The author definitely likes Kant because the author clearly dislikes relativism of any kind, but at the same time the author will show how Kant lacks a proper 'ground' when need be, and as a reader of Kant, it's clear that Kant must create his categories of intuition (transcendence) in order to escape relativism.

The author will show in detail five modern works of literature and how they relate to what he's been talking about. He does such a good job I can recall all five of them but I won't. I'll just mentioned I read one of them, both the comic book version, "In Search of Lost Time" the graphic novel and the real book version (don't laugh, the Graphic Novel is incredibly pleasing and informative). He made me fully understand how they relate to Nietzsche and Spinoza.

The author really likes reason. Cause and effect rule supreme. Everything happens for a reason and he embraces the 'principal of sufficient reason'. Similar to two other books I read last year, On the Nature of Things and Monadology. The first explains the world in terms of atoms and the second in terms of monads.

Also, I would like to relate what my favorite fictional book I have ever read and I did read it last year, Gravity's Rainbow to this book. Gravity's Rainbow is concerned with the "temporal bandwidth" which gives us a infinity of time as death approaches, the rebirth of all parts including the machine gun from WW I which leads to an eternal recurrence (a big theme within "Born-again"), there is no extinction just renewal, and everything happens for a reason or nothing happens for a reason (paranoia and anti-paranoia), Kornman favors the paranoia view point.

A final book that I read last year that I'll mention that relates to this book is Ecclesiastes, or The Preacher. By far my favorite book in the Old Testament. The real theme of that book (and also a theme within Gravity's Rainbow) is that the race doesn't always go to the swiftest or the smartest, but time and chance will often decide. Those are themes that I embraced, or as I said above "there but for the Grace of God go I", a sentiment which runs counter to "Born-Again". I could say that if I were to relive this life, I would not be able to give myself any general advice to have improved my lot because I was born this way and couldn't really be any different from who I was. Time and chance have made my destiny. The author, clearly thinks we are to blame for our own problems, but I believe that the luck we have and unearned gifts we have received make us who we are.

Overall, any book in which I can relate almost all of my previous years reading too, is a good book and I would recommend it, but mentioned that the 'born-again paganism' is not why I'm recommending the book, but I would recommend it for other reasons. (less)

Sometimes you have to play love by ear.

Aaron Seavers is a pathetic mess, and he knows it. He lives in terror of incurring his father's wrath and disappointing his mother, and he can't stop dithering about where to go to college - with fall term only weeks away. Ditched by a friend at a miserable summer farewell party, all he can do is get drunk in the laundry room and regret he was ever born. Until a geeky-cute classmate lifts his spirits, leaving him confident of two things: his sexual orientation and where he's headed to school.

Giles Mulder can't wait to get the hell out of Oak Grove, Minnesota, and off to college, where he plans to play his violin and figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. But when Aaron appears on campus, memories of hometown hazing threaten what he'd hoped would be his haven. As the semester wears on, their attraction crescendos from double cautious to a rich, swelling chord. But if more than one set of controlling parents have their way, the music of their love could come to a shattering end.

Warning: Contains showmances, bad parenting, Walter Lucas, and a cappella.

My Review:
I had a chance to get this book from the publisher for review and passed up on it because I wasn't so sure about the whole music theme. Then all the reviews started coming in and I had to have it because everyone was raving about it. And to be honest, I loved the first book in the series so I don't know why I didn't jump on this one besides an overpacked review schedule.

And just so you know up front...yes, the hype was right. This book is excellent!

The book starts with the end of high school with Giles and Aaron. Giles was the flaming gay kid that was bullied all through school...to the point of repeat hospitalizations. So he is thrilled about going off to college where people are more open minded, but his best friend, Mina, talks him into going to one final party in their hometown. There he runs into Aaron. Aaron is a new kid, but he's managed a level of popularity just because he's good looking and doesn't make waves. He's also deeply closeted and unsure about every single thing in his life. His parents make the decisions for him with an iron fist and that's left him unable to stand up for what he wants. Right now his main concern is college and finding a plan that will satisfy his very demanding father. The two guys have a single night together and then things are misunderstood between them. But it does do two things...that night lets Aaron know that yes, he is most definitely gay; and he plans to go to the same college as Aaron.

And that's when the real journey begins. And this book is a journey. It's about college and discovery and for these guys...learning to stand on their own and make their own connections and discoveries about themselves and others. Nothing is easy for anyone in this book. Giles has spent his life hiding in the shadows from the bullies. Aaron has spent his life living for his parents. And those are just the main two characters, but this book is rich with other characters, just as tormented and lost, making their own discoveries. It's an amazing book and as a mother of a college-age boy, I just wanted to round them all up and protect them from the realities of a harsh world. But that's kind of the point...they are learning how to stand up for themselves for the first time in their lives.

There are so many layers to this book...the harsh realities of the GLBT life; making adult decisions; finding a support network; seeing when others need a lift up; standing up for what you believe in. But it's all set to a world filled with acapella music that I loved. If ever a book needed to come with a soundtrack, I wished this one did, but Heidi Cullinan did an amazing job describing the score and the sounds and the magic that Aaron could create with his music. The book swept me away and I immediately wanted to reread the entire book when I reached the last page.

I hope that Samhain releases this one in print like they did the first book in the series. This is a series I want on my print keeper shelf. And there's another book coming. I'm crossing my fingers that it's about Baz and Elijah, although I'm not sure my heart can take the angst that will come with their story. Both these guys...my heart bleeds for them. Just like it did for all of them in this book. Heidi Cullinan stole my heart with these characters. Such an amazing book!

I highly, HIGHLY recommend it!! Oh, and read book #1 too...just because it's really good too. But they both work as stand-alones.

Sometimes you have to play love by ear.

Aaron Seavers is in a world of pain and he doesn’t know what to do about it. His strict controlling father wants him to pick out a suitable college and do it now. But Aaron doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life even if his father had decided for him. His divorced mother won’t support him against his father so Aaron knows he’s on his own and that’s a very lonely place. But no one would guess all that lurks just underneath the exterior of a boy considered one of the popular crowd and its just the tip of the secrets Aaron is hiding.

Giles Mulder can’t wait to get the hell out of Oak Grove, Minnesota. Giles has been through the horrors that middle and high school hold for someone who is different, gay and very different. Bullied, beaten, hospitalized, its all been a large part of Giles’ life, made bearable by the love and support of his parents and family. Now the chance to escape and reboot his life at college looms large. Giles is headed off to St. Timothy’s College where he intends to play his violin, and be everything he wasn’t in high school. Then he meets a drunken Aaron Seavers hiding in a closet at the party and it changes everything.

Aaron is in the closet in almost every way until Giles helps him out and home during a drunken binge at a party. When Giles mentions the college he is going to in the fall, something clicks with Aaron, unbeknownst to Giles and his plans. When Aaron appears on campus,, Giles is afraid that his high school experience is about to repeat itself. For Aaron, Giles rejection is just one more thing to overcome. Neither young man is prepared to the adjustments and changes that college has in store for them both. Giles and Aaron soon realize that sometimes you have to play love by ear in order to find that which you have always wanted.

The title Fever Pitch comes from a quote in the story, advice actually, that if you want something so badly don’t go after it in a fever pitch but slow down, make sure its real, and not just the perception of something you think you want to have. Excellent advice for the title characters here and life in general. Fever Pitch, the second in the Love Lessions series, by Heidi Cullinan, presents two young men on the cusp of adulthood. From starkly different background and families, they represent the best and the worst examples of teenagers dealing with their sexuality and thoughts of the future. Aaron’s childhood is one of stultifying control and restrictions. Even Aaron’s parents divorce, didn’t free him from his father’s oeverbearing, restrictive rules and regulations, especially as his mother lacks the ability to support and parent her son. Every aspect of Aaron’s life has been directed by his father and until his meeting with Giles, that wasn’t about to change. Outwardly, Aaron has everything, including being part of the “in” crowd at school, a faction of which has been tormenting Giles. Inside? Aaron is a mess. Giles, on the other hand, has the love and support of a family who adores him and that includes his homosexuality which they accept. But where Giles has it easy at home, school has been one nightmare after another, so much so that he has ended up in the emergency room at numerous occasions. Two young men, at odds with their surroundings, uncertain about their futures waiting ahead of them.

Heidi Cullinan is one of those writers who is able to take a teenage character and present them in a realistic and complex fashion. Both Giles and Aaron feel absolutely believable, up to and including their histories and back stories. The launching pad of this story is that odd time of panic and anticipation that happens at the end of the high school year, just before you leave for college. Too many paths branching out before you, so many unanswered questions tossing about in your head as you step forward towards your first experience of independence. Cullinan remembers this well and her ability to bring such a time of uncertainty and flux to life makes this story and these characters so moving and memorable.

There are so many wounded young men walking through these pages. And while the damage done to them all carries the same hefty emotional weight, each received their wounds in different manners. Aaron and Giles are so different yet the empathy and pain you feel for them both is balanced and heartfelt. Aaron especially with his moments of darkness and depression feels scarily authentic. Giles’s attitude and assumptions also feels right for someone of his age and experience. Sometimes you forget how hard it is to be 18 and this story is a perfect reminder of how tumultuous it can be and how out to sea they can feel.

One of the important aspects of this story and one that is beautifully portrayed is St. Timothy’s music department, along with the acapella songs that choral groups (that Glee and Perfect Pitch brought to everyone’s attention) sing as well as the school competitions and inequalities present among boy and girl groups. The interdepartmental politics and competition among students is laid out in a way that feels as real as every other element here. That includes the songs and arrangements mentioned throughout the novel.

There is angst, oh my so much angst, that your heart will bleed a little along with the characters. Through devastating events and stunning reversals of situations and beliefs, this is a story that creeps into your heart and mind to stay. Characters from the first story, Kelly and Walter, have huge roles to play here as do the characters of Baz and Elijah (yes, that’s Bad in Baltimore’s Elijah). But through all the issues, and swirl of emotions and adjustments, it still comes down to the love and romance of Aaron and Giles as they take their first steps towards adulthood and the life they want for themselves and each other.

Fever Pitch words fine as a stand alone or as part of a series. I missed out on Love Lessons and Frozen Heart and will now rectify that omission. Like me you don’t have to wait for those stories to pick this one up now. Its a must read as far as I am concerned. Heartwarming, deeply moving, and an ending you won’t believe. Get started today!

Cover artist: I couldn’t find it but as lively and fun as that cover it, it didn’t reflect the story inside.

African Americans and the Media, by Catherine Squires

From pamphlets denouncing slavery to boycotts of Hollywood, African Americans have fought for adequate representations of themselves in the mass media industries of the United States. This book provides readers with an interdisciplinary overview of the past, present, and future of African Americans in U.S. media and the ongoing project of gaining racial equality in media: a process which spans generations. Catherine Squires introduces the reader to the varied ways in which Black Americans have navigated cultural, political, and economic obstacles both to make their own media and to critique mainstream media.

Synthesizing the work of social scientists, historians, cultural critics, as well as comments from audience members and media producers, African Americans and the Media gives readers a lively entry point to classic and contemporary studies of Black Americans and mass media. Across the chapters, readers follow African Americans’ struggles to harness the power of print, broadcasting, film, and digital media, through five main themes which are woven through the book: representation, circulation, innovation, audience and responsibility. Taking in examples as diverse as Blaxploitation films, the work of 20th Century black activist journalists such as Ida B. Wells and A. Philip Randolph, and popular television such as The Cosby Show, this book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of media and communications and African American studies.

Review
"Prof. Squires has accomplished something quite remarkable with African Americans and the Media. This is not simply a 'textbook'. Rather, it is one of the most comprehensive, engaged works of scholarship to chart the relationship African Americans have with media. This book not only covers every medium, from print to internet, but it also examines innovation, audience reception, and even industry responsibility. This is an absolutely essential resource for students and scholars at every level."
Robin Coleman, University of Michigan
